By Hannah Eason and Sravan Gannavarapu (VCU Capital News Service) Days after Virginia’s legislative elections, anti-Muslim comments flooded news stories about Ghazala Hashmi becoming the first Muslim to serve in the state Senate, with hundreds of Facebook users linking her to terrorism and saying it was a “sad day” for Virginia. Hashmi, 55, D-Midlothian, defeated incumbent Republican Glen Sturtevant by 8 percentage points, 54-46. Sturtevant won Chesterfield, 51-48, and Powhatan, 77-23, but lost Richmond, 25-75. The state House has two Muslim men: Sam Rasoul, 38, D-Roanoke, who was born in Warren, Ohio, and Ibraheem Samireh, 27, D-Herndon. Samireh, who was…

MorrisseyRoss State Senate District 16 doesn’t feature conventional candidates. Disbarred attorney Joe Morrissey, 62, and his former employee, Waylin Ross, are squaring off Nov. 5 in a race to replace state Sen. Rosalyn Dance, whom Morrissey dispatched in the Democratic Party primary on June 11. Ross, 29, filed signatures to run as an independent at the proverbial “last minute” –June 11 – to give anti-Morrissey voters a choice in the general election. Ross – who said he wants to reorganize the defunct Readjuster Party – and Morrissey participated in a VPM forum Oct. 11 in Petersburg. Not shying away from…

Jeff Driskill is the county’s new EMC. By a 4-1 vote with Jim Holland dissenting, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved the Carvana project last week. The Tempe, Ariz.-based developer plans to build a car inspection and storage facility at the 184-acre site on Woods Edge Road. The supervisors had delayed the vote for a month in October. “I feel like there are proffers in here to address [citizens’] issues,” Bermuda District supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle said. “We have the challenge of balancing out residential, commercial and industrial so we can have a reasonable tax base.” Referring to buffers along…

Shajuan Mason, Matoaca (D) I would balance development by having more data surrounding the needs of the community and how the proposed development will address that need. I would have a separate commission conduct a needs assessment. The needs assessment would address how the proposed development would impact neighborhoods, schools, traffic, transportation, roads, infrastructure, and the impact on public safety. More importantly, the feedback from the citizens would be considered throughout the project. It is also important to look at the development that has already been approved but hasn’t manifested. This way, we are utilizing a more proactive approach versus…

MilesDavenport Stacey Davenport Age: 42 Status: Married with two children Why I should be elected? I am the only candidate in this race who supports keeping School Resource Officers in our schools to keep our children and teachers safe. I am the only candidate with the ability to rebuild the trust with our law enforcement and work cooperatively with Sheriff Karl Leonard, Police Chief Jeff Katz and the men and women in his department, and other leaders in our criminal justice system. I will evaluate each case individually and make decisions based on the facts of that case, rather than…

PohlChase A woman who calls herself a “liberal Christian” and campaigned last week with Alec Baldwin in western Matoaca is challenging an incumbent gun-toting woman who defied party politicos and recently got kicked out of a county Republican Party committee. The Senate District 11 race pits Democrat Amanda Pohl vs. Republican Amanda Chase in a district that includes most of Chesterfield County along with Colonial Heights and Amelia County. The district leans Republican, and Chase said her campaign’s internal polls have her up by 4 percentage points. On Oct. 16, Pohl told Joe Morrissey on his 100.5 FM WJFN radio…
