CHESTERFIELD – Chesterfield County’s Cooperative Extension office was recently recognized statewide for its school garden program, which works with area partners to help kids grow gardens and learn about healthy eating habits. The school garden program won Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2017 Program Excellence Award at the Virginia Extension Service Association’s annual conference. Chesterfield won in its district and the state category, winning $1,000 to go directly back into the gardening program. “The demand for hands-on school enrichment through 4-H gardens and horticulture has steadily increased,” 4-H extension agent Bethany Eigel said. “This award will help Chesterfield Extension to expand into…

The Chesterfield Economic Development Authority approved two business expansion incentive grants last week. The $50,000 grants will require the recipients to complete construction and comply with performance goals before the funds are disbursed, assistant director Karen Aylward said. She noted that recipients have three years to satisfy the grant requirements. New Bell Trucklines of 13101 N. Enon Church Road plans to relocate to a site on Jefferson Davis Highway and build a $1.5 million facility, she said. The project will include a 950-square-foot truck terminal that would be used for truck repair and warehouse space. EDA director Garrett Hart said…

Three options are on the table for extending Nash Road from Beach Road to Route 10. The Chesterfield County Transportation Department is considering the options to relieve congestion, specifically left turns, from Beach Road onto Route 10 from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays. County transportation director Jesse W. Smith said the county looked at widening Beach Road and concluded that would not remedy the problem. An informal community session was held Monday at the county’s Community Development Building. The county will be taking public comment on the three options. All of them are located west…

It was a long time coming, but Chesterfield County has a new extension office. The Cooperative Extension office relocated in late February from the old clerk of court’s office in the county governmental complex to the central library at the end of Lori Road. County extension agent Mike Likins remembers the move being considered as far back as 2011. Likins, who also serves as extension office director, said the move has provided more space for the county’s agriculture, family and consumer sciences and 4-H programs. Their former space was like a “rabbit’s warren” with several turns, nooks and crannies, he…

CHESTERFIELD – An affordable housing complex located off south Jefferson Davis Highway is getting a facelift. The owners of Colonial Ridge and The Glen at Colonial Heights apartments entered into a 30-year memorandum of understanding with Chesterfield County late last year meant to ensure the “livability and continued maintenance” of the property, which is located on the west side of the highway at Mangowood Drive just south of a railroad overpass. The agreement requires extensive renovations to 292 units, including new roofs, frames, doors, furnaces, condensers, thermostats and hot water tanks. A representative of the general contractor, Archer Western Construction…

How to proceed with a 1,675-acre property commonly known as the Matoaca Megasite is up in the air following the Chesterfield County Economic Development Authority’s vote last week to withdraw an application to rezone the property from residential to industrial. The EDA board met in a special session Thursday, May 3, and immediately went into executive session to discuss legal matters. Following the session, which lasted about an hour, the board voted 7-0 to withdraw the application. Longtime board member John Ruckart made the motion. “It’s clear that this project is alarming to a lot of folks,” board member Terri…

Following an executive session that lasted about an hour Thursday morning, May 3, the Chesterfield Economic Development Authority unanimously approved a resolution to withdraw a rezoning application for a proposed megasite on 1,675 acres in the southern part of the county. Several EDA members said the county should continue looking into developing the site, which currently has residential zoning. The EDA had been asking for industrial zoning to attract a manufacturing business. The EDA, which had planned to purchase the property from the Shoosmith family, suggested that the county purchase the land.

Chesterfield County adopted a new special area plan for the north Jefferson Davis Highway Area last week. The supervisors approved the plan 4-0 with Supervisor Chris Winslow absent. The plan replaces one that was approved in 1993. The plan – which covers the Bellwood, Bensley and Ampthill areas – includes over 13 square miles and some 12,000 residents and 12,000 jobs, county planning director Andrew Gillies said. He noted that the county began working on the revised plan in 2015 and said that more than 96 community meetings were held. Among the plan’s goals are enhancing the area’s gateways, pedestrian…

A project that has been slated to help replace the Tranlin project in northeast Chesterfield County is on a fast-track approval process. Greg Allen, the county’s planning manager, said last week that site plan approval for the “Goliath project” could come in the next few weeks. According to a site plan filed March 20 for Reynolds Real Estate Ventures LLC of Midlothian by Arizona-based developer Bob Gargaro, the 40.59-acre site allows for warehouses and offices. It is zoned I-3, or heavy industrial. The plan calls for a 5,000-square-foot office and 431,200-square-foot warehouse with a future building expansion area of 174,720…
