The National School Public Relations Association is honoring Dr. James F. Lane as one of the nation’s Superintendents to Watch. To some, the vultures claiming Dutch Gap as their rest and roost area are a nuisance. To others, the protected birds are a treasurer. They have been a source of controversy for years. Chesterfield County renewed a contract on July 1 with USDA Wildlife Division that allows for the monitoring, harassing and – if the county deems it necessary – even euthanasia of the birds. Health minded kayakers or canoe paddlers learn their chops touring the Farrar Gut backwater at Dutch Gap. But recent findings by citizens group, Hands Across the Lake, indicate that the old James River channel (used before the Dutch Gap Canal was built during the Civil War) could be contaminated with heavy metals. Although Dominion Virginia Power disputes the findings that arsenic, chromium, and lead are among heavy metals are well below the standards set by the EPA and DEQ. The new Experience Chesterfield website offers themed, three-day itineraries as well as a comprehensive listing of seasonal activities. Coxendale Road to be reconstructed, closing and delays are expected Contractors will be working on Coxendale Road reconstruction during the day from June 29 to approximately July 20. Employment in Chesterfield County last year grew by 6 percent. The increase for the entire United States was 1.9 percent for the same period. The details behind the 6 percent increase are impressive. During his last Board of Supervisors meeting before retiring, Chesterfield County Administrator J.L. “Jay” Stegmaier highlighted the record breaking growth in employment and business establishments in Chesterfield during last year. Chesterfield County recently named Dr. James D. Worsley as new director of the Chesterfield County parks and recreation department. Worsley is filling the position of longtime director Michael S. Golden, who retired April 1. Worsley will begin Aug. 1. Currently the parks and recreation director for Columbus, Ga., – he held that a position starting in 2011 –Worsley has a doctorate in leadership studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in recreation management and parks, recreation and tourism, both from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
