During her eight years as a senator, Hillary Clinton was part of a small but growing club of Democratic women. They gathered for monthly off-the-record dinners, shared a tiny ladies’ room just off the Senate floor and looked out for each other. They also shared dinners in DC and Northern Virginia locations. Clinton helped out in her own way, raising their collective profile and hitting the campaign trail for many of them. On Monday, 13 of them came together at a Capitol Hill hotel to return the favor for Clinton, each making her case for the Democratic presidential front-runner in…

While some results of last week’s election were expected, such as contests with unopposed candidates, others were not. Here is a rundown of the results in southeastern Chesterfield: Board of Supervisors in the Bermuda and Matoaca districts did not have opponents. Dorothy Jaeckle and Steven Elswick received 8,151 and 11,622 votes respectively. In the Dale District race Jim Holland won over Cliff Bickford by 2,032 votes (6,303 to 4,270 respectively) . Mr. Bickford succumbed to Mr. Holland four years ago in a race that yielded only a 932 difference between the candidates. In the two other supervisor races, Christopher Winslow…

Fees seem to be increasing every year: extracurricular activities, buses for sports teams, class supplies and Chrome Books to name a few. Will you work to lower or eliminate fees for students? JOHN ERBACH (DALE) While I don’t believe it is possible to eliminate fees altogether, we need to be flexible so that all children have the opportunity to participate in these programs. Flexibility means that principals have the discretion to offer payment plans, scaled fees tied to income levels, and fundraising opportunities on a case-by-case basis. In appropriate circumstances, principals may be permitted to waive fees altogether for families that…

Everyone wants to know about property taxes. Would you consider raising property taxes for next year (2016-17)? CLIFF BICKFORD (DALE) Increasing taxes as a way to achieve a balanced budget should always be the last resort.  When you consider that revenue generated from property tax has increased over the prior two budget cycles it would seem that another increase in 2016-2017 would be an inappropriate added burden on county stakeholders. JIM HOLLAND (DALE) I will not support or advocate an increase in the property tax rate.  The bi-annual and  five-year plan do not require an increase in the property tax rate. DOROTHY…

A constant complaint about Medicaid is that fewer healthcare providers take patients on public insurance programs, and the resulting quality of care suffers. The facts, however, tell a different story. According to the Commonwealth Fund Biennial Health Insurance Survey nearly all Medicaid (95%) and private coverage patients (94%) have a regular source of health care. The quality of care (rated excellent or very good) is higher for Medicaid patients (55%) than for those with private insurance (53%). Unfortunately, uninsured people are severely disadvantaged in both respects. Only 77% of those without insurance have a regular source of health care. And…

In a runaway victory last Tuesday in the 11th Senatorial District, Amanda Chase took down incumbent Steve Martin and Barry Moore. Both Ms. Chase and Mr. Moore were running for office for the first time. Chase overwhelmed Martin who held the Virginia Senate seat since he won the Senate position in a special election in 1994. Chase convinced voters that it was time for Martin to go. She beat Martin by over 1,000 votes in what was considered a low turnout election. Chase garnered 4,468 votes, Martin received 3,417 votes and Moore grabbed 2,691. A grassroots campaign brought Chase small…

DALE DISTRICT Near the entrance to Falling Creek Middle School (FCMS), Michael Jackson declared his candidacy for the Chesterfield County School Board to represent the Dale District. While the Dale District will be his first concern, he made his announcement in front of FCMS because it is a vivid example of how the current school board…
