Chesterfield County made a pitch to the public for the proposed new route to and from Henricus Historical Park during a community meeting on the matter. As a result of Dominion Energy’s coal ash cleanup efforts, the entry into Henricus must be closed to accommodate trucks coming from and going to the coal ash site, adjacent to Henricus. Approximately 100 people attended the public meeting held Feb. 25 at John Tyler Community College. Mostly residents of Rivers Bend, attendees’ concerns center around reducing the effect the proposed road will have on the neighborhood. The current proposal has the entrance coming…

Work is currently underway at the Chesterfield County Airport to ensure the landing and takeoff airspace in the vicinity is clear of obstruction. As part of this planned maintenance, trees were cut or removed from the area. The project is also the first step in the county’s effort to extend the runway length from 5,500 feet to 6,300 feet, which will enhance safety and increase opportunities for utilization of the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Virginia Department of Aviation are providing financial support and oversight on this project, which is expected to be completed in October. For more…
A group of mostly women protested outside last week’s school board meeting about health and maintenance issues. (Courtesy photo) Chesterfield’s former school superintendent was faulted last week by a school board member for the district’s maintenance and transportation woes. At the school district’s Sept. 10 meeting, Bermuda District representative Carrie Coyner laid blame at the feet of former superintendent James F. Lane, who led Chesterfield schools from July 2016 to June 2018 and left to become the state superintendent of public instruction. Lane was replaced by Merv Daugherty, who started Nov. 1. “We have had ongoing maintenance problems,” Coyner said.…
Greater Richmond Transit Co. plans to begin offering bus service along Jefferson Davis Highway in Chesterfield County in March. That’s the word from GRTC’s communications director Carrie Rose Pace. The service will run between the Food Lion in North Chesterfield near the Richmond city limit and John Tyler Community College in Chester. Last October, county transportation director Jesse Smith said the GRTC option would use 40-passenger buses that would run from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a $1.50 fare. A previous bus service route in the county ran along Routes 60, 150, 1 and 10, but ridership was “fairly…
The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a truck restriction for Woods Edge Road last week. Residents of the area requested the restriction in conjunction with a zoning case filed by Carvana for 184 acres on the northwest side of the road where the Tempe, Ariz.-firm wants to build a car inspection site. (The Planning Commission deadlocked 2-2 on the case July 16 because commissioner Peppy Jones was absent.) County transportation director Jesse Smith said the county requested the same truck restriction previously, which was turned down by the Virginia Department of Transportation in 2015. Last week, Smith said…
A Chesterfield man was injured last week while crashing a plane at the Chesterfield County Airport. State police responded at 8:42 p.m. July 2 to 7511 Airfield Drive. A preliminary investigation reveals that a small, single-engine homemade plane was taxiing on the runway when it inadvertently left the ground, came back down and skidded off the runway. The plane then overturned, entrapping the pilot. The pilot, Jake F. Labello, 69, of Midlothian, was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week approved funding for projects that would widen Route 10 to either six or eight lanes from Jefferson Davis Highway to Bermuda Triangle Road east of Interstate 95. In addition, Meadowville Road would be widened from two to six lanes from Route 10 to Rivers Bend Boulevard. Branscome – which is headquartered in Williamsburg – was the low bidder for the projects: one for $42.59 million and the other for $7.43 million. The company outbid Branch Civil, Curtis Contracting and Allan Myers for the larger contract – which runs from Meadowville to Bermuda…
A traffic detour is scheduled to go into effect on Monday, June 24, along Old Hundred Road – between Ramblewood Drive and Old Stage Road – as part of the Old Bermuda Hundred Road Improvements Project. The detour will remain in place through the end of August. The detour is the first phase of the road construction on Old Bermuda Hundred Road to raise a dip near the Old Stage Road intersection. Road construction will continue with alternating lane closures until the scheduled completion of construction in June 2020. Motorists can expect delays when traveling this route and are encouraged…
A study on where to build a new railroad station in the South Chesterfield area has ended for the time being with no conclusion. The Tri-Cities Metropolitan Planning Organization received word from Federal Railroad Administration official Marlys Osterhues in an April 4 letter that the study begun in 2014 had been discontinued. Last June, David Hyder, transportation director for the Crater Planning District Commission, said that a Finding of No Significant Impact should be complete by sometime in July 2018. That finding was to come on the heels of the completed environmental assessment, he said. Last week, Hyder said the…
