By Carelyn Sheppard Donner Grigsby, a retired engineer from NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, explained numerous topics from hurricanes and global warming to space exploration and the universe to the Chester Lions Club recently. He said scientists constantly monitor the heat at certain depths under the African deserts for the earliest warnings and source of hurricanes, like Florence. He encouraged the audience to think in terms of a much larger, or universal, scale. People tend to think only in terms of the time and space immediately surrounding them, he said. He has a much larger view of things, including…

–submitted by Carelyn Sheppard Police chief Jeffrey S. Katz recently spoke to the Chester Lions Club. He has had eight months to settle into his “new” job, since moving from Florida, and put forth his programs for the county as it moves forward. The efforts and those of his officers toward the youth and athletics should be commended and expanded by the citizens of Chesterfield County. Katz is a very personable man with numerous good ideas, but the most impressive thing is his attitude. The news media across the country and world has frequently gone too far in terms of videos…

The Chesterfield Food Bank and its five different food programs fed 1,800 people last week. While their focus was on feeding people, two of their partners, Grace Lutheran Church and the Chester Rotary Club, took the weekend to shore up their physical facilities by replacing the roof of their food supply building. “Replacing the roof was so needed,” said Kim Hill, food bank director. “We knew we had a big problem, and it would not make it through another winter without repair. We were at a point where we were bringing buckets in to catch water during a rain storm.”…
