The Woman’s Club of Chester presents a check to Harrowgate Elementary School Principal Dr. Patrice Wilson to support the school’s summer reading program. The funds have allowed for the purchase of a large variety of books to be used for the school’s community book mobile. Harley Young, Chester Civitan Candy Box Chairperson, recently presented a certificate of appreciation to Tina Phillingane, one of the managers of the Chester Shoney’s in the Bermuda Square Shopping Center on Jefferson Davis Highway. Shoney’s has led all Chester Civitan Candy Box locations in collecting donations for the past several years. The Chester Civitans are one of the leading clubs in Candy Box collections in the Civitan’s Chesapeake District. They are called the “Greatest Generation”: those who were born early enough to endure both the depression and World War II. Some of those men and women, who have now lived into their late 80s and 90s and fought in WWII, were honored last week by the Kiwanis Club of Chester. The soldiers were contacted though a sort of network. After being contacted by the club, one former service member would tell organizer Dr. Joe Hillier about friends who also fought in the war, and the number who would gather for dinner and recognition at Chester Presbyterian Church grew to…

The Chester Lions Club has elected new officers for the 2015-16 year. During their only June meeting, the club met at Meadowbrook Country Club for the installation of those officers. Joey McCaffrey from the Hopewell Lions did his usual outstanding job with the actual installation per the Lions’ international guidelines. The guest speaker was Dr. Ivan Perkinson, twin brother of Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson of Richmond. Ivan’s doctorate is from a seminary, while his twin’s is in dentistry. The Woman’s Club of Chester held its year-end luncheon meeting at the Half Way House and installed new officers for the 2015-2016 year. Over the years, the Chester Community Association (CCA) and Thomas Dale JROTC have fostered a relationship through their efforts in the Chester community. The JROTC teams with CCA volunteers to present ChesterFest every year. This year’s ChesterFest will be held on Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to  5 p.m. Recently, the CCA gave $1,000 to the Thomas Dale JROTC to aid in the numerous programs conducted in and out of school.
