The U. S. Economic Development Administration recently announced that the Crater Planning District Commission will receive a $70,000 economic development grant award to be matched with $30,000 in commission funds, to enable the commission to continue important economic development initiatives in the region. The Planning District was originally designated an Economic Development District in 1985. Its current 2018 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy identifies five focus areas that will strengthen the District’s economic base: technology expansion, workforce development, small business growth, infrastructure improvements and GO Virginia projects. Commission efforts are focused on major initiatives that have come out of the planning…

For the past month, the Matoaca MegaSite mania has dominated the news with no sign of slowing down. After three tense information sessions, county officials seem unwavering in their pursuit of forging ahead with constructing the site despite growing opposition and backlash from citizens. In complete contrast to the MegaSite controversy is the recent news that a Facebook data center will be headed to eastern Henrico County. Announced by Gov.Terry McAuliffe last week, the social media site will be investing $1 billion into a data center in the White Oak Technology Park. “I am proud to welcome Facebook to Henrico…

COMMENTARY: TIME TO NEGOTIATE? It was 1991 and I had taken a consulting job in Israel. Myself and two compatriots from here in Virginia lived and worked together managing the construction of about 600 American-style houses. The Israelis were building houses as fast as they could due to Russia’s Glasnost and the arrival of 12,000 Jews a month into the country. It was 1991 and I had taken a consulting job in Israel. Last month, the Economic Development Authority of Chesterfield announced its acquisition of 1,675 acres in south Chester (originally meant for residential use), which will be used to attract a large industrial manufacturing company that could bring 5,000 to 10,000 jobs and billions of dollars in investments to the county. Local residents, however, have been bristling at the construction of the proposed development and making their voices heard online and at the first of four open houses held to discuss the mega site. Robert Latino has been a resident of the Stoney Glen subdivision for 25 years and said the county…

It’s a split decision: the 1,675 proposed Megasite in Chester is liked by some, but not so much by others. And that also depends entirely on where people have put down roots. Chesterfield County Public Schools held a meeting on Thursday last week September 14. Carrie Coyner, Bermuda School Board Member, extended Harrowgate Elementary School’s back to school night to cover the issue of the East-West Freeway. “The meeting went well,” Coyner told the Village News. “We announced that Harrowgate Elementary School is directly impacted by the preferred location of the new thoroughfare road. Harrowgate was slated for a major…

CHESTERFIELD – Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe joined the Economic Development Authority of Chesterfield to announce the acquisition of 1,675 acres of prime real estate in the county to be used to attract a large industrial manufacturing company that could bring 5,000-10,000 direct and supplier jobs and billions of dollars in investments to Chesterfield County. “I am pleased to take part in announcing the creation of a significant new economic asset that will drive job creation and economic activity for Chesterfield and the Richmond region,” said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. “This site gives Virginia something unique and allows us to compete…

It’s been almost 10 years since the Americana Mobile Home Park’s last resident pulled up stakes to find a new home in another park of the county. A developer was to build a shopping center and apartments there. After much talk, and applications, made at the Chesterfield planning office and publishing elevations and site plans, the owners Trollingwood Land LLC have owned the property for 20 years and now George Emerson and Phil Roper are ready to close on the 66-acre tract. Initially the development will consist of 385 urban style apartments units in three buildings along the west side…
