At Henricus Historical Park’s Three Centuries of Virginia Christmas event, Saturday, Dec. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. interpreters will be demonstrating the changing traditions of English Christmas during the reigns of King James I (1621), King George III (1776) and Queen Victoria (1864). From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. that evening, enjoy the James River Advisory Council’s Parade of Lights from the banks of the park. During its fall concert, the Eastern Mennonite University Jazz Ensemble, of which North Chesterfield’s William Ragland is a member, will play swing, up-tempo funk, two Benny Carter pieces, and more. The 16-member ensemble under the direction of Robert Curry will take the stage at Lehman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. The concert is free and open to the public. The Richmond Brass & Percussion Consort, under the direction of George L. Tuckwiller III and featuring soprano Lisa Edwards Burrs, will present their annual “Concert in Honor of America” on Monday, July 3, 7:30 p.m. at Chester Presbyterian Church. The Richmond Brass and Percussion Consort is a large brass ensemble made up of trumpets, French horns, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas with percussion performing music from the 1600’s through the present. The Chester Community Association kicked off their summer concert series, Third Thursdays on the Green, with a bluegrass band that has played the venue in the past; Cary Street Ramblers. More concerts are schedule for this summer: July 20, August 17, and ChesterFest, September 23. The Richmond Jazz Band was in rare form Saturday during their latest big band presentation at the Chester Library under the banner “Spring into Music.” It was an important concert for the band as their Music Director Gilberto (Bam Bam) Rodriguez led his last concert. He and his fellow musician, wife Bertha Rodriguez, will be leaving the band to return to their home in Puerto Rico. It made for a very bittersweet last performance for the pair. In a historic first for the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the world of the traditional classical symphony orchestra will merge with the modem combination of electric guitars, bass, vocals, and rhythm sets as the Chester-based variety band, Outside the Wire, joins with the 55-member Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in its 5th annual Cabaret event on Saturday, Feb. 18. Chester-based music groupSuzie and the G-Tones are promoting their debut album, “Wine, Tears, & Rain,” at Ashland’s Coffee and Tea in Ashland this Saturday.
