CRAFTERS Handcrafted items are just the beginning of the arts that can be found at this week’s ChesterFest. As 150 vendors, including 60 handmade crafters and more who peddle art offerings, descend on the Chester Village Green Saturday, browsing and buying will make it a fun day all around. Antique cars, yummy treats, yard sales, fellowshipping from several local churches and the opportunity to visit with old friends and to meet new ones made for a festive air at the First Second Branch Community Day event, hosted by Second Branch Baptist Church and held at Beach and Bundle roads Saturday. Actress Kimilee Bryant will revive her Broadway role of Christine in a new musical production of “Phantom of the Opera” – based on the gothic novel by Gaston Leroux – for a one-night-only performance at the historic Byrd Theatre to benefit a children’s theater group based in Chester. The music adaption being presented by the Phantom Players stars Bryant, who played the role of Christine in the Andrew Lloyd Webber version on Broadway. She won national acclaim in the touring production and is the only actress who has played all three roles of Christine, Madame Giry, and Carlotta. Also starring…

Chester Outreach Church of the Nazarene invites the community to a concert featuring Avery Road, a Christian music from the Richmond area made up of Tim Wade and Jason Burton. Their music is a hybrid of Christian pop/country. Members include Jason Burton, lead vocals; Tim Wade, lead vocals, harmony vocals, bass, piano, and guitar; and Dakota Owen, drums. The concert will be held at the church at 13930 Happy Hill Rd. on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Since the first ChesterFest in 2001, there has always been music, from one band in the first year to this year’s lineup, the best yet. This year, the lineup will focus on the metamorphosis of music including old time Appalachia bluegrass, country, rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, spiritual, big band, acoustic manuche jazz, and at 7 p.m., a special concert by the Richmond Symphony. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will be a participating member in a free Time Travelers Weekend offering visitors a “passport” to explore several historical sites in Chesterfield. Magnolia Grange, built in 1822 by William Winfree, is a handsome Federal-styled plantation house named for the circle of magnolia trees that once graced its front lawn. Noted for its distinctive architecture, the mansion contains elaborate ceiling medallions as well as sophisticated carvings on mantels, doorways, and window frames. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) and Chesterfield Parks and Recreation will present “Daniel Trabue: Remember the Revolution.” The event at Magnolia Grange, to be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 24 is part of the Saturday Lecture Series program, whose goal is to further provide both historical and educational programming in an effort to increase awareness of the historical site. Noted interpreter William Richard Rose will be portraying Daniel Trabue. He will be reflecting on Trabue’s French Huguenot ancestry and early life in Chesterfield County. Presquile National Wildlife Refuge can be toured this fall, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the 1,329-acre island refuge and the native plants and animals it supports as well as the sustainably-designed education facilities of the James River Ecology School. The state fish and wildlife service announced last week the upcoming event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Wildlife Refuge. Visitors will be shuttled by boat across the James River to Presquile Island. In an effort to prevent long wait lines, pre-registration is required for all participants.
