RICHMOND – Sean, 25, didn’t socialize much in high school, but respite weekends at the Greater Richmond ARC’s Camp Baker in Chesterfield now give him the chance. Sean truly enjoys his time with his Camp Baker buddies, according to his mom Teresa, who says it is a safe place where he gets a break from his daily household routine. Route 10 Bridge Honored in name of Sgt. Aaron Xavier Wittman On Sunday, the bridge on West Hundred Road in Chester was named in honor of fallen Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, U.S. Army. At a ceremony at Chester Village Green, the bridge was officially named the Sergeant Aaron Xavier Wittman Memorial Bridge. Representatives and alumni from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, where Wittman graduated, attended the ceremony. Lt. Col. Jack W. Girl Scout Troop 5233 completed their Silver Award Project by installing mile markers in the Chester Linear Park. On December 27, at 9 a.m. at the Chester Linear Park, Girl Scouts from Troop 5233 will have a dedication and install plaques at the park. “Sadly, this will be the final event the girls will do together as a troop because the troop will be dissolved due to relocation of its leader and one of its Scouts to Alabama,” said troop leader, Shana Demby. Chesterfield County and Virginia State University (VSU) officials and friends of the Appomattox riverfront dedicated the Appomattox Trail, one of the newest parks managed by Chesterfield County’s Department of Parks and Recreation, last month. Visitors were able to tour the 1,329-acre island refuge, its native plants and animals, and the energy-efficient facilities of The James River Ecology School. The wildlife refuge offered a myriad of activities including an Audubon guided tour, wetland canoe trips, a butterfly exploration hike, and a self-guided nature trail. CHESTERFIELD – Online registration is open for the annual James River Regional Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Now in its 17th year, the cleanup is a tremendous regional effort in which volunteers remove hundreds of bags of trash and recyclable materials from the James and its tributaries. The cleanup is open to individuals, families, groups, boaters and paddlers. Volunteers select from 17 different cleanup sites throughout the James River watershed. Some sites have already reached capacity, and registration has been closed at Richmond’s Great Shiplock Park, Pony Pasture Rapids and Reedy Creek and Lynchburg’s Percival’s Island.…

PETERSBURG – Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) is hosting a second public meeting to present recommendations for trail routes, amenities, and logo branding, and to receive public comment for the purpose of developing two regional planning documents that will guide FOLAR in linking and enhancing the parks and trails along the Appomattox River.
