In the early days before career firefighters were employed by local governments, volunteer fire departments formed and became the hub of a community. Not only did volunteers respond to a fire, they organized fund raisers and community events. The auxiliary units organized the events as well as provided food and drinks for firefighters responding to calls. They brought their neighbors together with a mission and a passion to protect their community. Phillips Volunteer Fire Department, Station 13, came about as a result of the passions of area citizens and their concern over the lack of fire protection in the very…

Chester could get a new building at the entrance to Chester Village at the intersection of West Hundred Road and Old West Hundred Road. The proposed building would be called Chester Mini Storage and contain 500 interior storage units. The exterior of the building would look like an office building. The property where the proposed building would be built on is 3.4 acres. A buffer (native trees and bushes) would equal about 50 feet at the rear and west sides and five feet along West Hundred Road. The five feet is proposed due to the wide right of way that…

Who are these guys? Do you know? All we really know is that they were standing outside of Magee’s Pharmacy in Chester. It looks as if they are hanging out just chewing the fat on the sidewalk at the intersection of Old Hundred (Hundred Road then) and Harrowgate roads. New Chester gossip or business discussions; what were they talking about? At the time Hundred Road was a business district just a few blocks long. The businesses there at the time included a hardware store, a post office, and the first library in Chesterfield County including a grocery and of course,…

During the White Cane fund raising event on May 6 and 7, the Chester Lions Club met their monetary goal and the members met many wonderful supporters from the community. Many of those generous people are friends of members of the Lions and all are very kind-hearted.  There are always citizens who have stories about some earlier personal experience with Lions. The stories are accounts of times when they or a family member or perhaps just a friend were recipients of services provided by a Lions club. Pictured with Ralph Jones is of one of those recipients. When Carol Tillar…
