Parents and teen drivers are invited to the Come Home Alive safe driving program. With the goal of reducing car crashes and saving lives, the program brings together parents, students, school officials, law enforcement representatives and community members. Stressing the influence that parents have on teen drivers, Come Home Alive complements the driver education course taught in high schools. Over summer vacation, Matoaca High AP language and composition students had the opportunity to read “Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts” by Steven Faulkner. Described by Goodreads as “a poet with a sense of humor, Faulkner brings the majestic American heartland to life in one of the finest books ever written about a river journey.” The book describes the 1,000 mile journey by Faulkner and his son as they retraced the 1673 river journey of French explorers Marquette and Joliet from Lake Michigan to St. Louis. Local artists, Drs. W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. and Ivan W. Perkinson, entertained guests at Swift Creek Mill Theatre to help celebrate and launch the theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season with the opening of their art exhibit, “Perkinson Twins Art Exhibit, Reception & Play.” The exhibit and reception highlighted the Featured Artist Program at the Mill. Hundreds of visitors roamed the revered grounds of Henricus Historical Park over the weekend, taking in the flavor of a 1611 setting. Historical re-enactors who protrayed blacksmiths, farmers, seamstresses, soldiers of Civil and Revolutionary wars and Native Americans and more, manned the period correct colonial buildings and Native American longhouses. There was a special treat for adventure seekers and history buffs, a visit from the replica ship Godspeed, which arrived from Jamestown. Thomas Dale High School is inviting the public to participate in their Fall Brawl Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament. The Fall Brawl will be held Wednesday, October 28 at Meadowbrook County Club. Registration begins at 2 p.m. with buffet, door prizes and awards taking place at 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the J. Wilson Crump and F.B.F.C. Scholarships. Five generations celebrated during a bridal shower for Ashley Cunningham. From left to right are Mya Johnson, Ashley Cunningham, Penny Conner, Marie North and Clara Dennis. Cunningham said they all live fairly close to each other and go to church together. Clara Dennis is her Granny and she is very healthy at age 96. She has never worked or driven a car. Cunningham’s daughter is eight-years-old and has a good relationship with the entire family.

Sidewalks are showing up from Meadowbrook to Ettrick in the south east of Chesterfield. A new pedestrian walk was recently completed on Cogbill Road from Meadowbrook High School west to Iron Bridge Road. The two-tenths-of-a-mile project also included landscaping with crepe myrtles and period streetlights as well as curb and gutter on about half the project. “Many people have been asking for pedestrian accommodations on Cogbill,” said Jesse Smith, director of transportation for Chesterfield County.
