The Pocahontas Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists is accepting training applications now until October 30 for the 2016 Basic Training Class, which will be held January 5 to the end of April. The Virginia Master Naturalist Program is a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. Become Master Naturalists through 40 hours of basic training and field trips. The curriculum includes: basic ecology, geology, herpetology, botany, ornithology, dendrology, native species, entomology, mammalogy, ichthyology and more. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Saturday, September 26 will offer tours Presquile National Wildlife Refuge. The event offers exploration of the 1,329-acre island refuge and the native plants and animals it supports, All prospective participants must call or e-mail between by September 23 to secure a seat on the boat for a specific time. According to the Chesterfield County Planning Department, the comment portion of the proposed new chapter of the “Comprehensive Plan – Bikeways and Trails will focus on the long term future for non-motorized transportation in Chesterfield County.” The Planning Commission in June conducted a public hearing on the chapter. After hearing community concerns, the planning department produced a second draft.  This new draft is available at www.chesterfield.gov/bikeplan for review and comment.  This comment period will be open until September 22. The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on the second draft of the Bikeways and Trails chapter on October 20 at their 6 p.m. session. …

The James River Advisory Council is calling for volunteers to participate in the annual James River Regional Cleanup Saturday, Sept. 12. Volunteers can select from 14 different cleanup sites throughout the James River watershed. The following sites have a critical need for volunteers at this time. The vacant land in front of the Chester Library will soon be a construction zone. Long in coming, the Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation (CCAF) has raised about half the money Chesterfield County needs to begin construction on an approximately 20,000-square-foot performing arts center. But the $1.1 million funds only the Foundation’s part for constructing the building. The community (through the Foundation) needs to raise at least another $1 million to fund operating expenses. Wyatt Gordon, a 2008 graduate of Thomas Dale High School, was recently in Malaysia for two weeks competing in the World Cup of Malay Language Speech. After living in Indonesia for about a year and a half through the Critical Language and Boren scholarships, he felt comfortable with the Indonesian language. This was the first time he would speak Malaysian on such a public platform.
