Competitive spirit nets them success Family isn’t just an important thing. For some, it’s everything. It’s certainly proved that way for the McNeelys. The family got its start when basketball standout Michelle, who was raised in Colonial Heights, moved away to Louisville, and then back to the area. That’s when she met Mike McNeely, who was a football player at Colonial Heights known for his dashing mullet. It was love at first sight. They finished their degrees by way of Richard Bland and VCU and soon, there were children – Taylor and Caleb – on the way. The family now…

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced significant rollbacks to the Clean Water Act, removing federal protections from innumerable streams and wetlands that filter pollution, provide drinking water, and protect our communities from flooding. Since the Clean Water Act passed with bipartisan support in 1972, it has provided the framework for states, localities, and citizens to clean up streams, lakes, and rivers throughout Virginia and across the nation – and to keep them healthy. The protections of the Clean Water Act have allowed the James River to change from one of the Nation’s most polluted rivers to a cherished centerpiece of…
Josh Sloan doesn’t take anything for granted. He focuses on what he can do, not what he can’t do. He is an active sports participant, and he rarely sits on the sidelines unless he is encouraging someone else. He played football growing up and broadened his sporting activities to include mountain biking and snowboarding when he lived in Colorado. He is just as active today as he was six years ago, even after a spinal cord injury left him paralyzed from the armpits down. “I was involved in a bus accident in Ecuador where I was an English teacher,” Sloan…
Last month, James Vernon Daniels, known to most as Jim, received the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors. This award, doled out only once every four years, “is given to people who have dedicated themselves to serving the county,” Daniels said. Daniels, who “was very surprised to be singled out,” said he realized what an honor the award is after recognizing “other recipients, whose names are etched in bricks in the sidewalk in front of the Old Courthouse. Most of them are dead! I said I’m too young for a ‘lifetime’ award!” Jim Daniels with wife…

“Ready. Set. Go Bryce!” team: Katie Sloan, Bryce Conner and Carol Ray. Katie Sloan used life experiences to write her first book Katie Sloan has always loved working with children. After graduating from Longwood University in 1975, she began work as a kindergarten teacher in Chesterfield. “I recognized the vast differences in school readiness within the children in my classroom,” she said. “Many were ready to learn, some needed much encouragement to participate in group activities, others needed help communicating their needs and others needed help socializing with others.” These observations sparked Sloan’s interest in child development. She began reading about the development…
