The Kiwanis Club of Chester recently installed the new officers for the Thomas Dale High School Key Club for 2019-2020. The Key Club’s projects last year provided 1,400 hours of service for the Chesterfield Food Bank, Caritas, tutoring at Greenleigh, collecting food at Kroger and the Enon clean-up for those elderly who needed help with their yards.

Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation recently named Paul D. Wilmoth its new sports tourism coordinator. Wilmoth was chosen after a national recruitment process. He will be replacing Danny Bonifas, who held the position for almost two years. Bonifas took a position with Richmond Region Tourism. Wilmoth will begin his new duties March 25. Wilmoth will make $62,519 a year, according to a Chesterfield County spokesman. Having worked for more than 30 years in the parks and recreation field, Wilmoth brings a wide range of experience to the position. Chesterfield Career and Technical Center students, from left, Adam Riveland (Matoaca High School), Ryan Masi (Thomas Dale High School), and Gabriel Martinez Rocha (Thomas Dale High School) recently met with Dominion Energy mentors as part of the Get Into Energy Challenge. The challenge includes working with Dominion Energy mentors on innovative energy projects such as portable solar panels and smart street lights. The students have been working on their projects since February. Field Master Jim Daniels of Chester was the recipient of the annual William Whitehurst Trophy at a closing meet March 9. Daniels is pictured aboard Raleigh, an 1,800-pound former Richmond Police Department horse. Princess Anne Hunt awards the trophy to the member who shows exemplary dedication to the hunt for the year. Princess Anne Hunt’s kennels are located on the grounds of Sherwood Forest Plantation in Charles City. Twice weekly hunts are conducted from late October through the first of March in Charles City and surrounding counties. Approximately 100 members – riders and social members – participate in the festivities.

Chargers, Camaros, pickup trucks, roadsters, ’57 Chevys and others can be found at cruise-ins hosted by the Oldies But Goodies Classic Cruizers car club. Cruise-ins are held the first Saturday of the month until September, with the first scheduled April 6 at the Keystone Tractor Museum, 880 W. Roslyn Road in Colonial Heights. Money earned from the cruise-ins and special events goes to wounded veterans, club president Bruce Vecchioni said. “Once a year, we have a special event at the Beacon Theatre (in Hopewell) and present the money directly to the veterans,” he said. “Their faces just light up. Volunteers help clean up the banks of the Appomattox River each spring. Friends of the Lower Appomattox River is hosting its annual Spring River Clean-up Day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 30. Pick a site and come on out! Help restore healthy shorelines by removing litter, debris and trash from local lands along the Appomattox River at sites in Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell and Petersburg. This location at 1600 Ashton Park Drive in southeast Chesterfield could be where a new water treatment plant is located. The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors last week unanimously authorized the county to begin the designing and permitting process to add a water treatment facility on the Appomattox River. County staff believes that a fourth water source – in addition to Swift Creek Reservoir, Lake Chesdin and the James River – would provide additional flexibility to meet long-term water demands as the county continues to grow.
