In today’s society, self-defense may be crucial. “Self-defense is extremely important, not just for the mind, but for the body as well,” said Doug Taylor, one of the head instructors at Dong’s Karate in Chester. Self-defense includes physical and mental preparation, he said during a Feb. 8 self-defense class. There has been a Chevrolet dealership on the corner of routes 10 and 1 (West Hundred Road and Jefferson Davis Highway) for as long as most can remember. It has been more than 80 years since Harold Goyne moved his dealership, Dutch Gap Motors, one mile south to protect it from the construction of Interstate 95. The business survived and was sold to H. Carter Myers III, who grew a family of dealerships from one – Petersburg Motor Co., which his grandfather started in 1924 – to 13 dealerships and 16 franchises. Courtney Wells was honored for 59 years of service to the Chester Lions Club in a surprise announcement during the club’s 80th anniversary celebration Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Meadowbrook Country Club. Charles Wilson Stewart Charles Wilson Stewart, a Lucy Corr Health Care Center resident, celebrated his 100th birthday Jan. 29. He was born in Charles City and is the youngest of five children. Stewart worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Binswanger Glass. His daughters Veronica and Blondina, and many of his eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren joined in a birthday dinner.

Cynthia Piazza HOPEWELL — The John Randolph Foundation recently announced a new memorial fund at its Jan. 17 awards ceremony. The Cynthia Piazza Mind and Movement, or M&M, Fund will honor the life of a Chester woman who died Oct. 31 after battling brain cancer. Piazza taught for more than 20 years and was a Title I math specialist at Harrowgate Elementary School for 14 years. She was named the county’s elementary teacher of the year in 2010. The M&M Fund will carry on Piazza’s passions of improving the education of underprivileged students and encouraging physical fitness. Her husband, Michael…
