Chester resident Kate Ewalt recently received a Virginia Association of Science Teachers Recognition in Science Education (RISE) award. The award recognizes excellence in science education at the middle school level. Ewalt is a seventh-grade life science teacher at Colonial Heights Middle School.

A food machinery automation company plans to open a sales office in the Chesterfield County Airpark on Whitepine Road. JASA Packaging Solutions, Inc. chose the site over Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Raleigh, N.C. “Currently, there is a big growth in the U.S. going on in the healthy convenience market,” said Sandra Somford-Pannekeet, owner/president of JASA. A number of commercial developments are in the works in Chesterfield County besides a new Bissell plant that is going up. These developments include:•Project Lightning II, a 303,393-square-foot warehouse and 17,567-square-foot office building planned for 38.7 acres at 1401, 1501 and 1601 Bellwood Road east of Jefferson Davis Highway in the James River Logistics Center. The proposed use is a warehouse distribution center. There are 96.9 acres at the site. The developer, Devon USA, has had two buildings in the center since 2002. Construction is underway at the Project Goliath site at 1200 Battery Brooke Parkway. County officials have been hush-hush on providing details on the project because the county Economic Development Authority was involved. However, a construction supervisor at the site last week confirmed that vacuum company Bissell is building on the 41.6-acre site. A site plan was approved by the county July 12. The plan calls for a 431,200-square-foot one-story warehouse and a 5,600-square-foot office in the James River Industrial Center east of Interstate 95 and south of Willis Road.
