Chesterfield County elementary school students made 450 clay poppies that were planted in the lawn of the old Chesterfield Courthouse for a special ceremony Sunday, Nov. 11, symbolizing the significance of this Veterans Day. A 60-percent turnout of Chesterfield County’s registered voters yielded an upset last week as Democrat Scott Miles defeated Republican John Childrey by 2,527 votes, or 1.75 percentage points. The men were vying to fill the remaining year left on the term of former commonwealth’s attorney Billy Davenport, who resigned July 1. Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center would like to open a CT scanning facility on the campus of John Tyler Community College in Chester. The hospital, which is based at 13710 St. Francis Blvd. in Midlothian, submitted a letter of intent on Aug. 31 to file a certificate of public need with the state Department of Health’s Office of Licensure and Certification. Chris Accashian, the medical center’s chief executive officer, recently requested that interested members of the public submit comments about the proposal to the state agency in support of the project. COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A field full of more than 200 flags will be on display in front of the Dunlop House Assisted Living facility in Colonial Heights through Monday, Nov. 12. The field was prepared in cooperation with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2239 to honors veterans. Attached to each flag is the name of a veteran from Virginia who died while serving since 2003. John Tyler Community College is hosting a Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in Hamel Hall, Room H109, at the college’s Midlothian campus, 800 Charter Colony Parkway. Chesterfield County Sheriff Karl Leonard will be the keynote speaker. Leonard served as a Coast Guard reservist for 30 years, and has more than 30 years of experience working in local law enforcement. A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War I and a Veterans Day event will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, on the courtyard outside the old Chesterfield County courthouse. The event will include the unveiling of a World War I interpretive sign by the Chesterfield History Society and the board of supervisors.
