The year is 2020, and the last time Matoaca girls’ basketball had won 20 games was 20 years ago, under Charles Payton, who’s now the school’s athletic director. L.C. Bird  L.C. Bird boys track has put together a dynasty, winning four straight track championships, spread between two indoor and outdoor seasons. Now, they’ve built one of the best programs in the state, and they are once again expected to contend. Sophomore Jayson Ward ranked first in the state in both the 300 and 500 meters. L.C. Bird Four athletes committed to play college football with more possibly on the way for the Skyhawks. Chris Barfield is an athletic linebacker who spent some time at running back for L.C. Bird over the course of his high school time. An academic with a 4.4 GPA, he decided to attend UVA with a preferred walk-on status over scholarship offers from Ivy League schools. “Chris is a great football player as well as a great human being,” said L.C.
