Just five local teams saw action during what is exam week for many local students. Overall, teams fared well, winning six of eight games. Jordan Carpenter Jordan Carpenter and the Matoaca girls improved to 6-0 on the strength of balanced efforts. Carpenter, herself, continued to prove why she’s one of the best players in the Central Region. A stellar double-double against Deep Run with 14 points and 15 rebounds led the way, and another near double-double of 12 points and eight rebounds against Prince George rounded out the week. Alize Armstead, a senior forward, has shown improved play and averaged…

Everyone on the planet needs food, water, and air to live, but for Chester resident Bob Cullison, he also needs something else: BMX riding.  In the 1980s, Cullison began to start BMX racing as a child, with the sport consisting of three proficiency levels including novice, intermediate, and expert. Along with that, BMX riding was sectioned into age groups as well, with the oldest age group being around 18 and older. Disappointingly, Cullison was forced to stop BMX riding when he was 17 years old due to a broken knee he had sustained and stopped racing altogether for around thirty…

Matoaca In his second season as head coach, Daniel Clingenpeel is looking to push his Matoaca Warriors back to the greatness that they won three straight state championships from 2014-2016. “Matoaca Wrestling is returning a team with a good mix of experience,” said Clingenpeel. “We are returning seven wrestlers who were either freshmen or first-year wrestlers who gained a ton of experience last season.” Among those seven wrestlers were three regional placers, along with three upperclassmen who placed in region 5B last year. Returning 5B region champion Nick Garcia is hungry to improve on a 3rd-place state tournament finish last…

Knights start their season 3-0 As the basketball season got underway for seven of nine Chester-area teams, there was plenty of good news. After winning just five games last year, Thomas Dale already has 60 percent of that win total in the season’s first week. Under first-year head coach Keyode Rogers, Thomas Dale won the Rebel Invitational and started its season 3-0 by defeating Douglas Freeman, Mills Godwin and Meadowbrook. “We played good team basketball,” Rogers said. “We are being very unselfish on the offensive end and playing team defense on the other end. This is a good start, but…

Jasiah Williams OFFENSE The University of Richmond commit had no experience playing the quarterback position when he was inserted into the lineup as a starter last year, but throughout this year, Jasiah Williams has bolstered the Thomas Dale offense, especially late into their season. Williams was named the Village News Offensive Player of the Year as he went aflame in Thomas Dale’s last six games of the season, putting up 23 total touchdowns in the six-game period, pushing the Knights forward to their eventual loss in the regional final to Oscar Smith. On the season, Williams threw for 1,111 yards…

L.C. Bird enjoyed another wildly successful season, finishing with 20 wins and falling in the state quarterfinals to Maury, 50-42. The state tournament appearance was the program’s third in fourth years to go with a state championship in 2017. Coach Troy Manns, in his 14th year coaching varsity basketball and his 10th at L.C. Bird, will attempt to reload a roster that lost six student-athletes now playing basketball at the collegiate level. Departed players: Jamon Battle, Mack Burgett, Lance Monteiro, Corbin Slayton, Maliek Conaway, Everette Rivers. Battle is at Division I UNC Asheville, where is he already contributing as a…

Thomas Dale boys’ basketball has struggled in recent seasons. In fact, they won just five games last season. Now, there’s a new coach at the helm in Keyode Rogers, who has 16 years of coaching under his belt. Locally speaking, his last job was as an assistant under L.C. Bird head coach Troy Manns for the past four seasons. He’ll look to instill that same winning pedigree in the Knights. The team fell in the first round of the Region 6A tournament to James River last year, 83-56. Returning players: Myles Phillips, Kylon Lewis, Neal Phillps, Jahmeel Campbell, Luke Ogle…

By Soren Rutherford Coming into the new season, Matoaca looks to gather even more success after finishing a long regional run in the playoffs with a loss to Varina, 75-54. Despite having success last year with a 15-9 overall record, Matoaca will be playing under newly hired head coach Dennis Calloway. Departures: While the Warriors had several players leave the program due to transferring, they also lost Jalen Hargrove and Tyrese Tingle to graduation. Hargrove will be playing for Lynchburg College this year, while Tingle will be suiting up for the Apprentice School. Returning players: Essentially, coach Calloway and Matoaca…
