Matoaca’s Noah Roulo won the 145-pound Class 5 state wrestling championship this past weekend. He dominated the title bout, winning 11-2 over Tommy Baldwin of Princess Anne.
Chamont Thompson watches as Paul Davis signs. Last week, Meadowbrook High School’s standout running back Paul Davis signed a national letter of intent to play at West Virginia State University. The 5-10, 175-pound running back rushed for 1,010 yards for the Monarchs this past season, and has shown good pass catching ability. He was named third team All-Region 5. “Paul was the heart and soul of the team this year,” coach Chamont Thompson said. “He was a team leader and captain on both sides of the ball, and is an extremely hard worker.” West Virginia State, which competes at the…

Brandon Woody in action. Sophomore Brandon Woody left his mark at Matoaca High School with three state championships and went on to wrestle in college. He previously wrestled at 106 pounds, but Woody has moved up to the 141-pound class at Averett University in Danville. Woody excelled during the first week of the new year, taking home a championship at an invitational. At the Jim Crytzer Invitational on Jan. 5, Woody won his opening round match 5-1, and then pinned West Virginia Tech University’s Tanner Harris to move to the semifinal round. Woody then used the strength of four takedowns…

Soptelean photo) Reggie Simon’s work with the Carver Academy boys basketball program will be put to the test, as the team has its best chance at a lengthy playoff run since Toby Campbell’s tenure at the school when it was still Chesterfield Community High School. “The program had hit rock bottom the season before I got there,” Simon said. “They had only won one game the year before, and there just wasn’t any interest.” Five seasons ago, Carver Academy’s program won a single game. The following season they won five games,…
L.C. Bird High gridiron stars may not have reeled in an Alabama offer, but it was most certainly a productive week for four Skyhawks standouts. Mykey Anderson and DeMarkus Dancey said they will continue their academic and football careers at UVA-Wise. “Mykey was a shutdown corner for us and a dynamic player on offense,” L.C. Bird head coach Troy Taylor said. “DeMarkus played both ways for us,” Taylor said. “He is a tough kid [who] works hard, and he will get after it on the field.” Although he didn’t make it official on National Signing Day, shortly thereafter defensive tackle…
Rick D’Abreu and coach. While some may consider Thomas Dale High School’s defensive end Rick D’Abreu’s senior season a nightmare, it certainly turned out well for the ultra-talented student-athlete. After choosing James Madison University in the summer, D’Abreu was lost for the season due to injury during the Knights’ first game. Since then, his health has returned, and he’ll be playing for East Carolina University, joining two Matoaca High athletes – Jonathan Coleman and Immanuel Hickman – at the school. As a junior, D’Abreu broke out, tallying 72 tackles, a number that ranked him third on a fierce Thomas Dale…
Manny Hickman was one of the most heavily recruited football players in Matoaca High School history, racking up over 37 FBS and FCS offers. The senior originally committed to Cincinnati, decommitted, got more offers and eventually decided on East Carolina, where he’ll play with teammate Jonathan Coleman and Thomas Dale High School’s Rick D’Abreu. At 6-2, 245, Hickman was a force at defensive end. He accumulated 50 tackles (13 for a loss of yardage) and six sacks, recovered four fumbles, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and scored a defensive touchdown. “[Hickman] is one of the best payers we…
Malik Johnson Robert Johnson attended L.C. Bird High School before heading to Benedictine College Prep School, Indiana University, and preseason stints with the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks before landing with the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League affiliate. Johnson is averaging 6.5 points and 19 minutes per game in a reserve role for the Herd. He’s shooting 43 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three-point range.
