Charles Falden in action at Winthrop University. Charles FaldenL.C. Bird High Guard/forward Sophomore, Winthrop Falden was the 2016 Class 5 Player of the Year for L.C. Bird High and posted many memorable performances for the Skyhawks during his time there. Interestingly, Falden didn’t have a single “position,” which made recruiting more difficult for him. After a prep year at Massanutten Military Academy, Falden caught on with Winthrop University, a successful program in Rock Hill, S.C., and a member of the Big South Conference. Falden is getting significant minutes off the bench and has impressed as of late when given increased…

Coach Glenna Lewis has Matoaca High’s girls basketball team playing arguably the best basketball they have played in her nine-year tenure. Building off last year’s 19-win season, the Warriors have shot out of the gate, winning nine of their first 10 games. “Like we thought in the preseason, we have been able to play our whole team in the majority of our games,” Lewis said. “That definitely helps us out defensively.” “We are playing well in all position,” Lewis said. “We are seeing players develop and mature as we play and have had people step up big in pressure games,…

Jaden Watkins For L.C. Bird High’s girls basketball, it’s been more of the same this year – success in the face of whatever circumstances arise. Led in part by sisters Kielle and Kiyah Shaw’s defensive prowess, the Skyhawks have jumped out to a 7-1 start despite playing without last year’s leading scorer, Mya Coleman, who is lost for the season, and Kameron Brown, another important offensive player. “We don’t have a secret that we live by at Bird. Everyone asks what our secret is,” head coach Chevette Waller said. “The girls buy into what we do. They know that defense…

With Matoaca High School’s long history of producing quality linemen, it may come as no surprise that they have another to ascend to the college ranks: senior Justin Providence. “Justin is hard working, versatile and smart,” Matoaca coach Jay Parker said. “He brings a lot to the table as a tight end as well as a long snapper.” The 6-3, 230-pounder can long snap, play tight end, defensive end or on the offensive line. Virginia State was the latest school to notice, hence their offer. Riverside City College, a junior college in California, was the first to make him an…

Bird High School’s football program celebrated a big-time signing during the NCAA’s early signing period, which began this past week. Quarterback and defensive back Jaden Payoute signed a letter of intent to become a Virginia Tech Hokie. “It’s a very big weight (off my shoulders). It’s finally over so I can focus on what I have to do at the next level,” Payoute told Cory Van Dyke of Techsideline.com. “It’s humongous for me and my…

A duo of talented athletes from Troy Taylor’s roster saw the fruits of their hard work as both lineman DeMarkus Dancey and offensive lineman/linebacker C.J. Lynch picked up offers from West Virginia Wesleyan. At 6-3, 265 pounds, Dancey is a force on both the offensive and defensive line. He typically clogs the middle at either guard or defensive tackle, but is athletic enough to make pull blocks or to get into the backfield and make plays on the running back or quarterback. Lynch (6-1, 250) plays linebacker or offensive guard. In limited time at linebacker, he registered 12 tackles, but…

ABOVE: Chris Tyree totes the pigskin in action earlier this year. Chris Tyree’s name has been in the headlines for the past three years, even longer if you consider the level he was playing at in middle school. However, the Thomas Dale High School junior continues to reap the benefits of his athleticism on the field and a strong work ethic in the classroom. Last week he picked up offers from Michigan State and Kentucky. Tyree finished the football season with 1,446 yards rushing on 177 carries and 11 touchdowns. This included an electrifying 92-yard score and seven games with…
