A weak link causes a chain to break under pressure. That’s been the message and theme of the 2015 Thomas Dale track season started by head coach Jamarri Price. The chain that’s been forged by the Knights this season is as strong as ever. In a true team effort, all 21 girls that competed scored points and 19 of 22 boys scored as the Knights took home both the boys and girls Conference 3 Championships. “There isn’t really just one leader,” said Price. “They pick each other up all the time,” he continued. “When the sprinters are recovering, they’re motivating…

Conference 12 Tennis Matoaca is the most likely contender out of the teams left in the Chester area, as L.C. Bird does not field a tennis program, and while Meadowbrook has shown some promise, they have struggled to string together success. The boys had their work cut out for them in the opening round match-up and lost to Manchester, who they lost 6-3 to in the regular season. Manchester will advance to play Clover Hill, in all likelihood, and head to regionals as the two seed in the 5A South. Matoaca will still send singles and doubles teams into the…

The Florida State Seminoles, led by Lacey Waldrop were able to repeat as ACC Tournament Champions for the second straight season. The Seminoles swept three games in Blacksburg, Va., last weekend defeating Boston College, North Carolina State and Pitt for the crown. Waldrop picked up her 28th win of the season pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs in the first round to Boston College, striking out seven Eagles. Though her second two starts in the tournament did not go as smoothly, she was supported by excellent relief pitching by Jessica Burroughs, a redshirt sophomore. Burroughs combined to pitch…

A pair of talented strikers roam the soccer field in Southern Chesterfield. The two youthful players are big drivers of offense and are among the leading goal scorers in the Central Region. Thomas Dale’s Dominique Grubbs is the Knights’ most potent offensive attacker – in fact she has already notched 28 goals with at least a few games left on the docket in 2015. The sophomore’s campaign is an excellent follow-up on a season in which she scored 22 goals as a freshman. “Dominique is really fast and beats the defense when we send her a three ball,” said Katie…

L.C. Bird alum Tatyana Jordan continued her softball and academic career at Virginia State University. The outfielder’s freshman season was a great success. The former Skyhawk hauled in CIAA All-Rookie Team and All-Tournament honors for the 2015 season. Jordan hit .364 during her first year, driving in 11 runs and stealing four bases in the 23 games she appeared in, typically coming off the bench. Two three-hit games were recorded by Jordan – the first coming against Lincoln on March 29, a game where she also drove in four runs. The freshman was 5-7 (.714) in the CIAA tournament, rapping…

While chanting is not common during track meets, if Marsh played basketball, that is what the crowd would shout. The secret has been out on jumper Titiana Marsh. The Thomas Dale freshman turned heads by hitting a triple jump of 40’ as a frosh. Proving it was not a fluke, she did it again, jumping a 41’2”, a freshman national record. This past weekend at the Southern Track Classic, an invite-only meet held at Sportsbackers, Marsh was up to her old tricks. Marsh won both the triple jump and the long jump, setting a personal record at 19-10 with her…

Matoaca baseball, golf, and basketball athlete Sam Smith committed to Richard Bland College to play golf. Smith, a 2013 5A Golf State Champion will be a part of the Statesmen’s inaugural golf team in the fall. He joins Matthew Padgett as a recent Matoaca golf alum to ascend to the next level in the sport. Padgett is a rising sophomore at Bridgewater. In terms of baseball, Smith has been an All-Conference shortstop and was a three-point specialist for the Warriors’ basketball team off the bench this past winter.

Thomas Dale track standout Devin Bethea made it official and committed to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he will participate in track and field. Bethea runs sprints, but is better known for his excellent jumping skills, where his specialty is the triple jump. The senior excels at long jump. Per ncsasports.org, his career best in the triple jump is 45 feet, five inches while his best long jump stands at 22 feet, four inches. Both of these career highs were set at the 2014 Lee Davis Invitational. “Devin is a very hard worker,” said Thomas Dale Track Coach Jay Price. “He’s…

Ant Harris will get his shot at the NFL. While the L.C. Bird alumnus and former UVa safety was not selected in this past weekend’s NFL Draft- he was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in the frenzy of free agents signings that occur after the draft ends. “Proud to say my next home will be in Minnesota #GoVikings,” Harris said via his twitter account. Most mock drafts had Harris going between the fifth and seventh rounds, but getting drafted really only effects how much you stand to get paid through your initial rookie contract in the NFL, with the most…
