Dominion Energy has received 12 proposals to recycle coal ash at five of its ash ponds at four power stations in the state, including one in Chesterfield. The utility company made the announcement in a Nov. 14 press release. Earlier this year, the state Legislature passed a law – Senate Bill 807 – requiring that Dominion Energy conduct a Request for Proposals to determine the feasibility and costs of recycling coal ash at four power stations (Chesterfield, Possum Point, Chesapeake and Bremo) and other ash facilities at Chesapeake Energy Center. Dominion received 12 proposals and bids that ranged from $2.77…

ABOVE: Scott Miles, on right, will be Chesterfield County’s next commonwealth’s attorney. A 60-percent turnout of Chesterfield County’s registered voters yielded an upset last week as Democrat Scott Miles defeated Republican John Childrey by 2,527 votes, or 1.75 percentage points. The men were vying to fill the remaining year left on the term of former commonwealth’s attorney Billy Davenport, who resigned July 1. The seat will be up for election for a full four-year term next November. “I want to thank the people of Chesterfield County for voting to bring real change to our community’s criminal justice system,” Miles said…
ABOVE: Jack Wilson III is pictured in his office in Chester. A well-traveled Chester resident is the new chairman of the state Republican Party. Jack Wilson III, who was born in West Virginia but grew up in various locales across the globe as his father served in the Army, has had a land use law practice in Chester since 2008. Wilson was elected Sept. 8 to replace Loudoun County resident John Whitbeck as state GOP chair. Wilson plans to finish Whitbeck’s four-year term, which ends in 2020. He is unsure if he will run again. When asked why he ran for…
ABOVE: GOP Senate candidate Corey Stewart talks with Asher Purvis and Tracy Lynn at the Chesterfield County Fair on Aug. 28. Being down 19 points in the Real Clear Politics average of recent polling in Virginia’s U.S. Senate race doesn’t have Republican candidate Corey Stewart down. Stewart came to the Chesterfield County Fair last week to meet locals in advance of the Nov. 6 general election, where he will face incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine. When asked what is going to put him over the top, Stewart said that Kaine is against everything that President Donald Trump is doing to revive the…
A committee is scheduled to consider what to do about funding commonwealth’s attorneys for reviewing body camera footage from law enforcement officials. The recently-passed state budget contains that language, Chesterfield County officials say. A committee that is to be created from representatives from the state Supreme Court, state Department of Criminal Justice Services, commonwealth’s attorneys, local governments and others is charged with making a recommendation to the state House Appropriations and Senate Finance committee chairs by Dec. 1. Mary Ann Curtin, Chesterfield’s legislative liaison, said she and Del. Riley Ingram, R-Hopewell, worked on the language that was adopted in the…
A decision on where to build a new train station for high-speed rail is headed down the track but hasn’t reached the destination yet. “The final decision hasn’t been made yet,” said David Hyder, transportation director of the Crater Planning District Commission. He added that “it looks like” the proverbial train is headed to Colonial Heights. The Federal Railroad Administration has the final say on the matter, he said. “Whatever the FRA signs off on, we’ll sign,” he said. The selection would be made at some point following the release of a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI. Officials…
Chesterfield residents won’t have a lot to vote on come June 12. No county elections are on the ballot, but there is competition for some U.S. House and Senate seats. Providence Forge minister Ryan McAdams and Chesterfield fashion designer Shion Fenty are running for the GOP nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Douglas McEachin in November. McEachin, a Democrat, won the redrawn House District 4 over Michael Wade in 2016 with 57.7 percent. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer, and airline pilot Daniel K. Ward are vying for the Democratic nomination against Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Brat in House District 7.…
Above: Dominion Energy spokesman Rob Richardson looks at the Chesterfield Power Station from the upper coal ash ‘pond.’ Recycling coal ash was popular at the state Legislature this year. A bill that requires Dominion Energy to conduct a request for proposals for recycling options at its two legacy coal ash “ponds” at the Chesterfield Power Station passed with near unanimous support. Gov. Ralph Northam signed the bill (SB 807) into law March 30. The new law delays closure of the ponds – which are now mostly dry – and requires Dominion to produce a business plan that complies with the…
Kirk Cox enjoys his job, and as the 55th speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, he hopes to continue in that post for several more years. Cox, R-Colonial Heights, became speaker in January when he began serving his 28th year in the state Assembly. He was elected to the state House in 1989 and began serving in 1990 when the Republicans were “way in the minority.” At that time, serving as speaker was “not on my radar,” he said last week following an evening presentation before the Chester Lions Club. The former government and history teacher replaced Bill Howell,…
RICHMOND – Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox announced March 8 the formation of the House Select Committee on School Safety to make recommendations for consideration by the General Assembly during the 2019 Session. This is the first select committee formed in the House in 155 years. Select committees are reserved for matters of considerable significance that cross the jurisdiction of conventional and established standing committees. “The House of Delegates led the effort in recent years to make our schools safer, but the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, shows us that we must be ever-vigilant when it comes to school…
