Toward the end of World War II, captured German soldiers were housed behind what is now DSCR. Unlike the treatment that American POWs got in Germany, POWs held here were treated fairly. According to DSCR history, “In 1943, a 2,000 capacity prisoner of war camp was built on a 50-acre parcel adjacent to the depot. German POWs built the camp which held 1,200 German prisoners, with 130 military policemen guarding the camp.” Prisoners worked outside the camp but were paid for their work, though they received scrip that could be used only at the camp canteen. Quite a few POWs…

To the Editor: There once was a flea who lived in a jar. The jar had a lid on it. Every day the flea would jump and he would hit his poor little head on the lid. One day the lid was removed and as the story goes, the flea only jumped to where the lid used to be. The flea’s habits never changed and it never left the jar even though its constraints were removed. Chester has a new front door. State Route 10 or West Hundred Road used to be a barrier for people who wanted to walk…
It almost seems impossible to not write about the flu each year once flu season starts. This is especially true because of the sudden and drastic rise in cases in our area over the last few weeks. The state of Virginia is currently seeing widespread influenza-like illness (ILI) activity. The CDC currently indicates we are in the moderate to high activity range, as are states that border us including North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Information regarding national and regional flu activity is available to the public at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm#ILIMap. Last year and the year prior, the peak for the flu season…
As I drive around our area, I notice two familiar scenes: 1) Fresh mulch on commercial property landscape beds. 2) Innocent crepe myrtle trees being hacked. It must be spring. A familiar scenario that many gardeners encounter now that the thermometer is increasing is impulse buying. We have all done it. Some plants at the garden center are so beautiful they seem to jump onto our cart without assistance. Then it happens….we get home only to discover that perfect place is not so perfect. You can avoid this predicament by shopping at a local, full service garden center. The staff…
