A trio of names that have already cemented their names in Matoaca athletics lore recently carved out some big time accomplishments at the college level – Neal Richards (VMI), Austin Akins (Coker) and Blake Roulo (George Mason). After a third place finish in the Southern Conference 157 pound weight class, he earned a berth to the NCAA tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Roulo, a senior at George Mason finished fourth in the 149-pound weight class at the Eastern…

Recently, rising senior linebackers Rayshard Ashby and Isaiah Moore’s recruiting stocks have increased. Ashby picked up yet another offer and perhaps his most significant from West Virginia, a school now in the Big 12 conference. WVU joins Marshall, Maryland, James Madison, Virginia Tech and…

Also capable with the stick, Spiers has rapped…

Virginia Tech on Haskett’s trail Excitement for Virginia Tech basketball is reaching levels it has not in years after Buzz Williams’ improvement of the program from a cellar-dweller to a bubble team for this year’s NCAA tournament. Excitement for the program may be at its highest; a high point this past weekend as the Hokies upset No. 7 Miami to finish the ACC regular season campaign with an exclamation point. The gregarious Williams has been spotted in the area recently watching L.C. Bird guard Mario Haskett. Haskett’s recruiting exploded last summer and has continued a gradual climb into schools in…

Cadets from Thomas Dale, Meadowbrook, Monacan and Manchester were treated to a…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Well, I finally did it. Yes I did! I have mentioned before about the sorry state of my billfold and how it is the nature of males to hold on to their wallets as long as possible. So, I finally came to a decision last week… and… and wait for it… I gave up and duct taped my wallet. Yes! I just had to get a few more months out of my wallet so I cut some strips and refortified the corners so my credit cards will no longer…

According to Chesterfield County Public Schools budget documents, funding for the 2016-17 school year, totaling $600 million, marks the first time that investment in public education has reached prerecession levels. However, Superintendant Dr. Marcus J. Newsome said there is still work to be done. The CCPS budget passed last week by the School Board includes operating costs which will add an additional 28 teaching positions identified in the five-year budget plan. It also also provides 14 previously unrequested support positions to help educate a growing and diverse community. The 28 teaching positions identified in the five-year budget plan will help reduce…

A Superstreet, proposed in 2014, is close to being back on schedule. Due to traffic generated by the Meadowville Technology Park, various homes and multi-family developments, the intersection at East Hundred Road and Riversbend Boulevard has become a true example of a traffic jam. To resolve the issue, Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is about to build the first Superstreet in Virginia. A Superstreet is an innovative intersection treatment that safely and efficiently manages congestion by eliminating the left and through traffic movements on the minor cross streets of a busy…

In late November 1961, the ground shook from Bellwood to the City of Colonial Heights; from Enon to the Courthouse. The Howard Johnson’s Restaurant (now Deny’s) on West Hundred Road just west of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike (now Interstate 95) had blown up. Sixteen persons were injured including then Bermuda District Supervisor Garland Dodd. A preliminary investigation indicated that the boiler in the basement had malfunctioned. The roof dropped about four feet and the concrete floor buckled. Windows were blown out and all that remained were small shards of glass. One woman’s legs were trapped under a concrete block wall. About…
