To the Editor: It was such an honor and great experience to serve as the 2015 Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother. Serving as ambassador for this wonderful organization allowed me to speak at many civic organizations, businesses, clubs, church and youth groups. Participating in five parades and being at an elementary school where we received 365 books along with hugs from the children to share with children less fortunate has to rank high on my list of favorite experiences. The generosity of our sponsors and donors who have contributed $216,000 to date is overwhelming. This total includes $54,000 from our auction…

Cancer is a very ominous word. It literally means “crab,” and usage of the word aptly describes the way a malignant tumor attaches and holds on to its victim. There are as many types of cancers as there are types of cells in the body. Some are more common than others, such as lung, colon, breast and prostate cancers. Each cell in the body has a specific function and is under strict genetic and body system control. Each cell grows, divides and dies in a predictable manner. A liver cell, for example, looks the same as every other liver cell…
Trees and shrubs in landscapes provide several benefits: shade, habitat for wildlife, increased property value, and beauty. An eight-foot-tall tree you proudly planted may now be 30 feet tall and more difficult to care for. This is where a Certified Arborist can mean the difference between a well-managed tree and a tree that just manages to survive. I sat down recently with Jason Anderson, Board Certified Master Arborist and co-owner of Arborscapes in Midlothian. I have known Jason for a number of years through the volunteer work he does for the Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Service and I am also…
Each year, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards honor the creative abilities of middle and high school students throughout the country. This year in regional competition, Chesterfield County student achieved a total of 110 Gold Keys, 196 Silver Keys and 298 honorable mentions. Because there is not a central Virginia competition, Chesterfield students compete in the Southeast region at large, which covers several states. Gold Key winners go on to national competition; national winners will be announced March 14 and honored in a New York City ceremony. Here are the winners in the Village News coverage area: Elizabeth Davis Middle…
