I recently spoke at a Christian school, to the junior high and senior high class. One of the questions that I got asked was, what was the most rewarding call that I ran during my career? Believe it or not, I do not remember which call that I told them about. We ran a lot of calls when I was in Chester, when I was in Manchester, when I was at the airport station, and even when I was in Matoaca and Ettrick. There were calls that went well and there were calls that did not go so well. We…

When Andrew White Sr. started playing basketball, it was probably reminiscent of the opening scene of Space Jam. In the 1950s, White Sr. played semi-competitive basketball in King and Queen County on dirt courts. At the time, he did not have an idea of what he was starting. Later, he became a reverend and the namesake for Petersburg’s football stadium and the Community Center at Zion Baptist Church. Now a well-known figure in the community, Rev. White got the ball rolling on an impressive lineage of basketball talent that eventually rendered Andrew White III (Nebraska) and Andrien White (UNC Charlotte).…

Thomas Dale two-way football standout Max Evans recently announced he will attend Chowan University this fall. Evans’s senior year at Thomas Dale was his first on the gridiron. The 6-5, 260 pound all-around athlete originally chose to pursue a career in basketball. According to Max, it did not take long for him to realize his true calling. “I always loved the two sports but enjoyed basketball more,” he said. “When I played in my first varsity scrimmage I found out I had made the wrong decision.” All ends lead only to new beginnings. Max’s realization on the hardwood was the…

Matoaca’s two-time defending state heavyweight champion Anthony Helm recently announced he will attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University this fall. Helm chose VT over The University of Virginia. A lifelong Hokie fan, Anthony says he has always seen himself in Blacksburg. “I have always been a VT fan from when I lived in North Carolina and here,” he said. “I have always grown up watching, hearing and knowing VT and I really enjoy the engineering program. I have just always seen myself as a Hokie.” Helm has been a dominant force in Conference 12 and the state of Virginia…

When students arrived at school last Wednesday at Curtis Elementary, they noticed their teachers were wearing mouse ears and some even had painted whiskers on their face. When they were questioned, their teachers said it was a special day and they were all in for a big surprise at the end of the day. The build-up for the students was the kick-off for “Curtis Reads,” a celebration intended to bring together their school and families to share the love of reading. The kick-off assembly that was held outside included the arrival of three motorcycles and their riders with their saddlebags…

The intoxicating aroma of Indian food is ever present when walking into Ambrosia Indian Cuisine Family Restaurant located near River’s Bend. Local residents and restaurant owners, Daljit Singh and Kulwinder Kaur opened their doors three years ago for us to discover Indian food and its rich mix of spices. In the restaurant business for nearly 10 years, the owners bring the spicy, rich and flavorful dishes to Chester that have more of a northern region influence which means the dishes tend to be creamy with yogurt-based sauces. Kaur enjoys greeting customers, helping with selections and explaining the terms on the…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. The Super Bowl is over and I am very happy about the outcome. I am a big Manning fan and I hope he takes this opportunity to retire while he is at the top of the mountain. He has nothing else left to prove; he can now go off to being a coach or a TV analyst like Terry Bradshaw. Anyway, not all went well during the Super Bowl game. I was at a Super Bowl party, sort of, the other couple that was to come got delayed by…
