An effort to build a dog park in Chester started last summer. The project, spearheaded by the Chester Community Association (CCA), will be a facility where dog owners can take their favorite canine for exercise and safe play with other dogs. The CCA has worked through several steps including developing a relationship with the Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department, getting initial approval from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) and contributing the first $5,000 to the effort. “This new dog park in Chester will be an excellent addition and asset to our community,” said Sean Eichert, vice president…

Latin music filled the air with festivity, children giggled and smiled in a long line that snaked around the room at L.C. Bird High School. They excitedly waited for the three kings to arrive at the “El Juguetazo” or “Three Kings Day” event last Saturday. The volunteers were smiling too, as they busily readied the toys donated by businesses and caring individuals to be handed out. Three Kings Day is celebrated by many in the Hispanic communities in remembrance of the Three Wise Men who traveled to the nativity bearing gifts. The gifts at the event are given to children…

Once located on a knoll where the Chester Walgreen’s now stands, the Shepherd House, once the queen of Chester’s houses, was possibly the largest home of its time period in Chester. Built by T.S. Shepherd, circa 1900-10, the house remained in the hands of the Shepherd family – although in later years it had been divided into apartments – until the early 1960s when it was razed to make way for the Chester Post Office. In 2002 the post office was torn down and its operations were moved to its current location.

Belcher’s Trophies and Swift Creek Mill Theatre were among five businesses that were recognized during Chesterfield County’s Investiture Ceremony last month. The Rooted in Business program also recognized Crab Louie’s Seafood Tavern, Metro Richmond Zoo and The Boathouse. Garrett Hart, director, Economic Development, recognized the businesses during the ceremony. Each business had representatives in the audience and were recognized as Hart read their story. “Belcher’s Trophies epitomizes the spirit of small business,” he said. “Kitty Belcher founded the business in her home in 1984. Today, her husband, Wendell “Tiny” Belcher, and their son, Tyler Belcher, continue Kitty’s business legacy in…
To the Editor: I agree that there is entirely too much negativity, hatred and anger in our country, but the majority of it is coming from the extreme Trumpet movement that I will assume is the Republican Party. I have never heard the threatening, screaming, lunatic behavior of the Trump supporters and the Cruz supporters. I didn’t have a problem with Republican ideology until the Bush era. But Trump has trumped them all. I look at his face and it screams of hatred. If this is the new Grand Old Party then we are doomed. People that I thought were…
While we haven’t quite experienced the bitter cold of winters past, twilight still appears much too soon, the trees are barren, and the world lacks color. Cardinals dot the branches of my naked trees and give me little bursts of joy, but alas, winter is still here. We may be having 70-degree days, my windows may be flung wide open in the dead of January, but try as I might; the doldrums have appeared. I get this way every winter, and truly wish that I could hibernate. Those that know me well probably wish that I would. I become melancholic,…

The Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to identify and locate a shoplifting suspect in this week’s Crime of the Week. Just after 10 a.m. on Dec. 11, a black male entered the Walmart in Chattanooga Plaza and immediately went to the electronics department. The man placed four 10-inch RCA tablets into a Walmart shopping bag, placed the shopping bag into a cart and walked out of the store without paying for the devices. Then, just after 11 a.m. on Dec. 16, the same man followed the same pattern of behavior, walking out with six additional RCA…
