For the third time in 15 years, the Thomas Dale Knights and the C.D. Hylton Bulldogs met in the 6A South Regional Quarterfinals, and this time, the Knights prevailed victoriously, 17-14. Led by Roderick Wilson’s 19 tackles and one sack, the Knights’ Dark Zone defense was present early and often against the high-powered Bulldog offense. “Wilson’s 19 tackles is one heck of a game at any level,” head coach Kevin Tucker said. “We’ve asked our guys on defense to come out and do things they’re not used to and they have all stepped-up this year.” After holding Hylton to a…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful but hurting Dogpound. Yes, despite all of the exercise and eating right… well… mostly right… I had to give up and go to a chiropractor. My sciatic nerve has been acting up something terrible of late… especially in the car. Not sure why the car is such an issue since I can sit at my computer at work or at the table at home with minor issues, but drive for 30 minutes and I get this pain crawling across by buttocks and down the right side of my leg. I had a serious…
It’s hard to find a simpler, yet more personal way to decorate your home for the holidays than with fresh evergreen trimmings from your yard or garden. “You can use all types of evergreens to make your own swag,” said Augusta County horticulturist Mark Viette, who appears on Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s weekly television show Real Virginia. He recommends using cypress, juniper and fir cuttings. First, check out your evergreens, and cut a long growth from one. “You want a nice, long, flat spray for your swag,” Viette said. “Take time and look for the nice pieces.” He also suggests cutting…
In the animal kingdom, dolphins are ranked among the best swimmers. Ocean Lakes, who’s mascot is the Dolphins, just couldn’t handle the Rapids. James River drowned Ocean Lakes 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16) on Friday, winning the 6A State Championship Friday, their third state championship in the past six years. “It was just an incredible feeling to have put in so much hard work since August and be able to accomplish our goal,” said Conference 3 Player of the Year Kyle Brumbaugh. “We set our expectations high and reached them; it’s a testament to how good a team we had.” The…
Colonial Heights coach Mark Lee isn’t always right, but he’s never wrong. Good thing. Under Lee’s guidance and that catchphrase in practice, Colonial Heights boys volleyball team captured the school’s first state championship in any sport since 1986, a span of 29 years. The Colonials defeated Midlothian, 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-21) Friday afternoon at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on the campus of VCU. “He is always right,” said senior Stuart Crinkley. “We make a suggestion and he’s always willing to try it, but we’ll end up doing it the way he suggested in the first place. He’s never led…
In 1611, while English ships continued to supply, populate and monetize the Virginia colonies, the trip, which travel 3,000 miles and took over two months was a serious challenge but ships like the Susan Constant and Godspeed aided in the colonization of Virginia. A replica of these types of ships, a British three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, was started in the 1970s and completed in the 1980s. Called the Sea Lion, the replica is now being restored and headed for the Citie of Henicus Historical Park in Chester. The Sea Lion is in harmony with the mission of Henricus to educate…
Transportation by foot, bicycle, automobile, public transit are options, which some are available and some are not. We know that most of us can jump in our car and go just about anywhere. Bicycling is exceedingly tougher but is coming around in small pieces; travel by foot is gaining steam through the construction of sidewalks. Some sections of sidewalk have been constructed recently in both Bermuda and Dale districts in Southeastern Chesterfield. Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle has come a long way in her support of pedestrian right-of-ways and is now pushing for the concrete paths across her district. Supervisor Holland is…
