The vacant land in front of the Chester Library will soon be a construction zone. Long in coming, the Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation (CCAF) has raised about half the money Chesterfield County needs to begin construction on an approximately 20,000-square-foot performing arts center. But the $1.1 million funds only the Foundation’s part for constructing the building. The community (through the Foundation) needs to raise at least another $1 million to fund operating expenses. The CCAF is not alone in efforts to build the facility. Chesterfield County will be taking on the lion’s share of the construction costs of…

It all started when… It is a lead (newspapers typically spell it lede) that really bothers me. And although I do not particularly like it, some leads start with the date that a particular event will take place or took place. The Village News has just started year 18, covering news, not just Chester to areas such as Bensley, Enon, Ettrick, Matoaca the Courthouse and as much of southeastern Chesterfield as our limited staff can muster. “Your Neighbors, Your Community, Your News.” Although I have been writing articles and opinion since the paper was put together in our dining room,…

Wyatt Gordon, a 2008 graduate of Thomas Dale High School, was recently in Malaysia for two weeks competing in the World Cup of Malay Language Speech. After living in Indonesia for about a year and a half through the Critical Language and Boren scholarships, he felt comfortable with the Indonesian language. This was the first time he would speak Malaysian on such a public platform. Wyatt is currently a fellow with the East-West Center and studying for a master’s degree in Urban Planning at the University of Hawaii. He was excited to learn that he had been selected to be…

In just a matter of days the children in our area will be returning back to school. When the kids get back in school, so do many of the common contagious germs. Staying healthy during the school year requires a combination of both common sense and medical science. Parents, schools, health departments, and medical offices gear up this time of year to help prevent children from getting sick. Among the most effective first lines of defense against unwanted illness are vaccinations. Mandatory vaccinations prior to entering school have greatly decreased the incidence of some of the most common and, at…

With the arrival of Labor Day and kids returning to school, it is time to get serious about fall lawn renovation. This has not been a typical summer for some of us. My mower, for example has not collected dust in the shed as in summers past. However, cool season grass such as fescue, which is the dominant turf in our area, has requirements to maintain its vigor. Below are five steps to fabulous fescue: Have your soil tested. See my July 22, 2015 column for more details. You can view it at www.villagenewsonline.com/category/commentary/lifes-a-garden. Aerate your lawn to reduce compaction.…

Crime Solvers needs your help to solve a robbery. On May 22, 2015, at approximately 8:40 p.m., an employee of Bogie’s Inc. entered Extra Space Storage at 7000 Hull Street Rd. Once inside the facility, the worker began to head toward one of the storage units. Upon approaching it, he was confronted by two males who had their hands in their pockets as if they had guns. They demanded cash and stole more than $35,000 worth of electronic cigarette products. The suspects are both described as black males standing about 6 feet tall and wearing black hooded sweatshirts. They were…

This year’s fire prevention week theme is “Hear the beep where you sleep.” Fire incident reporting shows that the large majority of civilian fire injuries and deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., while most people are sleeping. You have read where I have stated that your house must have an adequate number of smoke alarms, but another vital aspect of that protection is for them to be properly placed in your home. The minimum was to have a smoke alarm on every level of the home, including the basement. However, due to further studies, it has become part…
