Proud parents Greg and Kim Lanier last week accompanied their son Andrew Lanier as he signed a letter of intent to run cross country for Longwood University. Andrew is a standout on the Matoaca Warrior cross country and track teams where he qualified for regionals freshman through senior year in cross country and track. L.C. Bird High School would like to announce the L.C. Bird Basketball Skills Camp 2015. The camp, which will take place from June 15 to 19, is for girls ages six to 16. Explore Chesterfield County’s diverse trails by registering for the Great Park Challenge (GPC). The GPC encourages individuals and families to visit five different county parks in order to answer questions about the parks. Registration will take place Saturday, June 6, at 8 a.m. at any one of the five parks. The five parks included in the GPC include: Radcliffe Conservation Area, Dodd Park at Point of Rocks, Dutch Gap Conservation Area, Rockwood Park and Robious Landing Park. Molly McFadden, a special education teacher from Curtis Elementary was awarded a MCD Grant of $5,000 for the 2015-2016 school year.  Ms. McFadden will purchase stand-up desks for a variety of classrooms at Curtis. The purpose of the desks is to accommodate students with different learning styles, allowing them to stand while working if they wish. Students will be given a choice to use the stand up desks during instruction and independent work. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to use the desks here at Curtis!” she said.

English 10 students from Caroline Brown, Gina Hackett, and Beth Lucas’s classes hosted an event on May 29 certain to affect the hearts and minds of the L.C. Bird community while trying to effect real and lasting change in our world. Bird’s “Change the World Extravaganza” was held in the L.C. Bird Library. Austin Leighton, a 10th grader at Thomas Dale High School has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston from June 28 to- June 30. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream. Members of the Matoaca High School (MHS) American Red Cross Club and their families and friends recently volunteered at the Virginia Home 3 Mile  Fun Walk. This is the sixth year that the Fun Walk has taken place, and the MHS American Red Cross Club has volunteered each time. The Virginia Home is a private non-profit that provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible disabilities. Gov. Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education honored 14 Chesterfield County schools with 2015 Virginia Index of Performance awards for advanced learning and achievement earlier last week. Not one school was honored east of the “Chesterfield Mountains” (schools in the Bermuda, Dale and southeast Matoaca Districts.
