The Chesterfield County Purchasing Department today announced a notice of award to SSC Service Solutions for custodial services during the 2015-16 school year. The notice was made after a six-person evaluation committee recommended that Chesterfield County Public Schools negotiate a contract with SSC Service Solutions. A contract with the national cleaning firm is expected to take effect at 41 Chesterfield County schools on July 1, is projected to save Chesterfield County Public Schools $3.6 million next year and includes the eight schools currently being served by GCA Services Group. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV), in partnership with Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer four camps this summer. Diggin’ in History for Beginners is designed for children ages eight to12 who will learn how to search for clues from the past. Hands-on activities include site surveys, excavations and artifact repair. A field trip to the Prince George Heritage Museum is included. Frosty’s Corner is a historical salute for many of the long-standing residents of Chesterfield County. County citizens continue to use this intersection (Iron Bridge Road and Cogbill Road) as a landmark for directions. The name “Frosty’s Corner” came from life-long resident Roy Dean “Frosty” Smith. He was born in 1906 and died at the age of 72. He was married to Helen Armstrong Smith, originally from North Carolina. Frosty and Helen had two daughters, Joyce Smith Quaiff and Shirley. Draft Bikeways and Trails Plan, which is proposed to be a new chapter of the Comprehensive Plan is moving forward. The plan, which will be part of the overall Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Master Plan made its way through a countywide public meeting process and was approved by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission (PRAC) at their April meeting. Ten citizens spoke in favor of the plan, PRAC unanimously endorsed the plan. Between Friday, April 17, and Monday, April 20, two homes were broken into in the Southcreek subdivision in southern Chesterfield County. One home was on Southcreek Drive and the other was on Majestic Creek Drive. Many electronic items, such as PlayStation and Xbox gaming systems, jewelry, gift cards and cash were taken from the homes. We have seen two mass transit incidents lately that had totally different outcomes. The Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia injured and tragically killed many.
