The dog days of summer seem to be a figment of the imagination as we begin our third week back to school. Splashing, running, and soaking up the sun are things of the distant past. No more Popsicles and bare feet, they have now been traded in for brand new tennis shoes, and sandwiches packed lovingly into lunchboxes. School is back in full force, and we have finally adjusted to our routine this year. I’m happy to report that my new fifth- and first-graders are adapting very well to their new grade levels. Each coming home excited each day as…
By Becky Robinette Wright The couple stood close together, the lady with a stylish black English dress and the gentleman with blue-colored colonist attire. The lady gave a last look around with a faraway look in her eyes. Perhaps she was dreaming of the new land she would see or was solemn at the thought of leaving her family, friends, and homeland. Pocahontas, the Powhatan Indian girl known in English circles as Lady Rebecca, and her husband John Rolfe were preparing to set sail from the Citie of Henricus to England. It’s Sept. 17, and Henricus Publick Day has begun.…

A s we watch the news from the New York and New Jersey bombings as well as the stabbings in Minnesota, I have just returned from Nairobi, Kenya. Traveling internationally causes you to see many of the changes that have occurred due to terrorism, whether in airports or shopping centers. One problem that I see is that, even though we have become more vigilant to stop these people, there are still many things yet to be done. We have heard many times that while law enforcement must get it right over and over, a terrorist only has to get it…
There are a couple of new components in the mix for Matoaca girls’ volleyball this season, one a coach and the other a setter. The Warriors are betting that those two ingredients could be the missing ones to ensure better playoff success in 2016. Both coach Tiara Boyd and setter Makenzy Johnson have come in and made impacts early, as the Warriors have gotten off to a 6-0 start and have their eyes set on a deep postseason run, knocking off traditionally strong north-of-the-river opponents. “Coach Boyd is a new coach, and she’s always open to new ideas and new…
Hello and welcome back to the traveling Dogpound. That is right…I took my first extended vacation in a long time and I survived. It was worth it because I actually got to meet my Master for the first time. I know it sounds strange, after so many years, but in my defense, I have made an effort, but for some reason I was always missing him…barely…but still no contact. I did wonder about the open swinging doors and the squeal of tires, but the staff was always reassuring that I would catch him next year. Despite all that, we did…
Grayson Cullather became the youngest race car driver in Southside Speedway’s 57-year history to capture the title Rookie of the Year in the Late Model Division at the .333-mile asphalt oval short track. Hamlin raced to victory Saturday winning the final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup regular season with a win in the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Cullather, a rising star on the track at the age of 15, raced…
