It’s the middle of August and many varieties of perennials have finished blooming for the year. One species in our area, however, is still forming flowers. Rudbeckia hirta, commonly known as Black-Eyed Susan or Gloriosa daisy, is thriving in home landscapes. Let’s explore this landscape workhorse further. CHESTER – This year’s second annual Hops in the Park is Saturday, November 12, and there are exciting new features being added to the event. We have partnered with a local Richmond artist, Mickael Broth, to have him create this year’s “brand/artwork” for the event. Thursday, August 18, he will be painting in the Church and Meeting Hall 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. His canvas will be a wooden door built by interpreter Terry Marr, in the style of the Church and Meeting Hall’s front door.

Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers needs your help this week to solve an identity fraud. On July 5, Chesterfield County Police received a call from a resident whose bank had notified her that her account had a negative balance. Upon investigating the claim, she discovered that an unauthorized transaction had occurred at the Wells Fargo on Midlothian Turnpike. NORTH CHESTERFIELD – Hundreds of excited visitors streamed into the St. Augustine Catholic Church Festival during the four-day event last weekend. Squeals of delight could be heard from excited children as they spotted the pony rides, games, and other midway rides such as the Sizzler and a Ferris wheel. CHESTER – The blazing sun and extreme heat did not delay Boy Scouts from Troop 2837 based at Chester Baptist Church, working on a construction project for a fellow member and his Eagle Scout project at the Enon Fire Training Station. A team of 12 Scouts and seven adults, working under extreme conditions, followed the directions of Scout Joseph Short, last Friday and Saturday to construct a 9/11 Memorial for the Chesterfield County Fire Department.
