Since 2009, the Bronco World Series has been a staple of summer little league baseball in the county. This time, Chesterfield Baseball Clubs (CBC) will look to reclaim the title after a third-place finish last summer. The Bronco All-Stars are coming off a gold bracket championship at the annual Richmond Flying Squirrels tournament, taking home first place honors. CBC is led by Isaiah Lucero and Bryce Adams offensively, while pitchers Andrew Jones and Caden King are capable either in a starting or relief role. Games are played Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with CBC playing at 8 p.m. each of…

A leader is someone who demonstrates what’s possible. Thomas Dale’s Matt Lawton emerged from a two-quarterback system early last season and came out on the other side as a team leader. That leadership has been rewarded, as the Knights quarterback received his first offer from Chowan University, in Murfreesboro, N.C. The Hawks, coached by Tim Place (10th year), are a NCAA Division II team that plays in the CIAA. Chowan went 6-4 overall last season and 4-3 in their conference. Amid a Knights program that has always loved to run the football, Lawton found success through the air, and with…
By Thomas C. Dozier Paul “Bear” Bryant once said, “If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.” Well, Meadowbrook rising senior Jordan Jeter is starting to feel his rewards. Jeter, just like his Monarchs teammate Matt Hodges before him, picked up his first offer, and it happened to be from University of Virginia-Wise, the same school that gave Hodges his first offer. UVA-Wise, led by fourth-year coach Dane Damron, plays in NCAA Division II‘s Mountain East Conference. The Cavaliers…
Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Some good news. The little doe I mentioned that is hanging around the house…well…she finally gave birth…twins! Oh yes…before I forget…more good news..my colonoscopy came back clean as a whistle…[pun intended]. Of the Top 25 Virginia Localities with the Highest Toxic Air Emissions, three are in the greater Richmond area, with two in the top ten: Chesterfield zip code 23836 ranks fifth, the City of Hopewell zip code 23860 ranks seventh alongside Hanover (23005) which is No. 20. These three zip codes combined had over 2.5 million pounds of toxic pollutants released into their collective air in 2014. Local governments depends on the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to oversee pollutants of air, water and land. These reports seem to come as a surprise when reported. Locality typically lose must of…
The wild and wonderful historic James River stretches 340 miles from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay. This July, for the sixth year under the guidance of the James River Association (JRA), 27 students from across Virginia are embarking on an educational expedition down the James River for an amazing adventure that is sure to be an experience that each participant will remember forever. The expedition began July 10 and is broken into three separate trips that will cover the majority of the James River watershed: the upper James, 70 miles; the middle James, 100 miles; and the lower James,…

An Arby’s restaurant is planned north of the Kroger Marketplace in the retail space adjacent to the shopping center, a Marco’s Pizza franchise, promises a buffet of your favorite pizzas. The Big Oak Grill will be opening in…
The National School Public Relations Association is honoring Dr. James F. Lane as one of the nation’s Superintendents to Watch. Only 24 school superintendents across the country were selected, and Dr. Lane is the only Virginia superintendent on the list. The Superintendents to Watch program recognizes educational leaders with fewer than five years experience of the superintendent position who understand that effective communication leads to school and student success. Dr. Lane took over as superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools on July 1; he was with Goochland County Public Schools when he was named a Superintendent to Watch. “It is…
