Last week the Chester Community Association met with Thomas Dale JROTC members to present them with a monetary contribution of $1,000 to benefit the JROTC program. Thomas Dale JROTC has been a vital ally to the CCA over the last decade by lending support at ChesterFest every fall. On May 1 at 10:20 p.m., the Exxon at 2708 Buford Road was robbed at gunpoint. A male suspect approached the counter, demanded cash and pointed a gun at employees. After he exited the store, he and a female accomplice fled the scene in a dark-colored Hyundai sedan. Crime Solvers is now turning to our community for help with this case! A recent house fire in Chester was caused by fire getting outside of a grill, catching the outside of the house ablaze, with spread to the inside. Firefighters arrived to find the exterior rear of the house in flames, with extension into the attic. No one was injured, but the house suffered extensive damage. I do not know how the fire got outside of the grill, so I will have to offer causes based upon past experience. Elizabeth Davis Middle School (EDMS) is pretty excited about its summer reading program. “Let Me Take a Shelfie,” which includes taking pictures of the reader while doing what? Well, reading of course. Susan Worsham-Moore and Emily McDaniel, librarians at EDMS, are pretty hyped about the new program. “This is our first big kickoff for the summer reading program,” Worsham-Moore said. Students from Salem Church Middle School participated in their first annual “bridging the gap” event this year, where volunteer students refurbished computers and donated them to families in need. Virginia STAR (Student Training and Refurbishment Program) receives impaired computers each year from state government agencies, in hopes of having students refurbish these computers and donate them to families without a computer in their home. This was the first year that Salem Church middle participated in this statewide event. More than 20 students volunteered their own time after school to refurbish these computers.
