The large 8- by 12-foot American flag flying above the Village Green in Chester got caught in its flag pole topper, a couple of weeks ago on what must have been a very windy day. The flag pole is crowned with a highly detailed Eagle Flagpole Finial. Several residents in the area were quiet concerned that the flag was going to be damaged.  The Village News and property owner Jim Danielsreceived several phone calls.  The Village News did receive a suggestion that the fire department could be called. Before they could be called, the fire department crew from Engine 1…

Virginia was the 29th state in the United States to legalize a state run lottery when it voted 57 for and 43 opposed in 1987.  Virginia was also the first Southern state to allow a lottery. Of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, all now have lotteries with the exception of Alabama, Mississippi, Utah, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii. The funds collected are divided into a number of pots before any monies reach the education system, which is a major destination for these funds. Each dollar going into the lottery for all tickets (scratch, powerball, etc.) goes roughly 60 percent to prizes,…

As I write this, it is raining, again. I am sitting in my comfy clothes (i.e. yoga pants and a stain spattered button-up) drinking my “digestive tea” as “House Hunters” plays in the background. It is cozy, it is peaceful, but if we have to deal with any more rain this spring I will scream. Rainy days are lovable in moderation. If the sun is shining I absolutely feel that I must be out doing something. Whether that means working in the yard, tending to the chickens and the gardens, or running errands, I ultimately feel like I have to…

I just rode by a house that was ravaged by fire early Sunday morning. It was obvious that the fire had started on the front porch or in the vicinity of the front porch. Fire investigators have determined that the fire started in a flowerpot, on the front porch, from an improperly discarded cigarette. In this fire, the occupants were displaced, but no one lost their life. Why do I call this a common cause? In Chesterfield County alone, there have been three house fires   – in the recent past that I know of – that were caused by improperly…

Nothing says American summer like cookouts, iced tea, and swimming pools. Really, it is the community swimming pool that has come to play a major role in American communities. That is very apparent in Stoney Glen where families have been cooling off by the community pool on hot summer days since it opened nearly three decades ago. Still, what has made Stoney Glen’s community pool such an important piece of the Chester community is not the summer heat relief or  the cookouts and iced tea; it is the swim team. Since 1996, kids in and around Stoney Glen have been…

By Doug Riddel While Chester has had a railroad presence since before the American Civil War, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) passed through town for only about 70 years. By contrast, the right-of-way through Chester, the former Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) – presently owned by CSX Transportation (CSX), and used by Amtrak trains as well as its own freight trains – is a descendant of the Petersburg Railroad, from Richmond to the Cockade City, one of America’s pioneer rail lines. The CSX route through Chester continues to be a vital link with the main line stretching from New…
