One of the major beneficiaries of the Morse telegraph was the American railroad system. Virginia State University recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its brand new $84 million Multi-Purpose Center. The 167,000 gross sq. ft. event facility has approximately 5,200 fixed seats and can accommodate nearly 6,200 for events. The facility is the home of Trojan basketball and volleyball, and will include food and retail services, media spaces, classrooms and faculty offices, a wellness center and conference/meeting spaces. Virginia State University will host a presentation by Ira Wallace, Central Virginia master gardener and owner of the cooperative Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. The presentation, Family Heirloom Seeds: Saving Our Stories, Saving Biodiversity, will be held on Thursday, April 7 at 3:30 PM in the Engineering Auditorium. The Chester Station Camp No.1503, Sons of Confederate Veterans will celebrate Confederate History month in Virginia with a flag Ceremony on Saturday, April 9, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Confederate Monument on the historic 1917 Chesterfield Courthouse Green located at 10011 Iron Bridge Rd. Members and friends will place at the monument a miniature of the Second National flag inscribed with the name, rank and unit of their ancestor. The flags will be left in place for the duration of the month. Following the flag ceremony, a reception will be held at the Chesterfield Museum.
