Q &A: Do you want to increase, decrease or let cash proffers stay the same?
0Top left, Jim Holland, Jim Ingle, Kevin CarrollBottom left, Murti Khan, Shajuan Mason, Tammy Ridout Jim Holland, Dale (D) * Our new proffers policies are working well based on a recent report to the Board of Supervisors. Since we voted to change our policies to include “Revitalization areas” in the County, we have new houses, apartments and multi-tenant complexes being built in Chesterfield. This new policy provides housing options for workers and families alike to live and work in Chesterfield, a “First Choice Community.” In the Dale District, we have a wide range of desired housing options. Recently, I directed…
L.C. Bird’s kicker is a trailblazer and a queen
0Angel Hines and Dominic Gray https://youtu.be/4cercem2ejo Soccer player Angel Hines took her role as a “kicker” and gave it a new meaning. In August, she made the decision to expand her skills from the soccer field to the football field of L.C. Bird High School, becoming the first female to make the team in the school’s history. Defensive coordinator Matt Bland noticed Hines at a First Touch soccer event in which his daughter was playing. Bland invited Hines to try out, and she accepted. Being a football player had new types of drills, physical tests and techniques, but Hines has…
McDougald enjoys teaching kindergarten
0Kelly McDougald is completely content being a kindergarten teacher for the rest of her career. McDougald calls teaching kindergarten her passion. She began as a special education teacher in kindergarten and first grade, but switched because she wanted to be on the “general education” side in a collaborative setting. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in special education/curriculum and instructional specialist from Longwood University. This is her eighth year as a kindergarten teacher at Bensley Elementary School, where she was recently named “Teacher of the Year.” Kelley Hetrick, her second-grade teacher at J.B. Watkins Elementary,…
School teacher supports Coyner
0I am ready for this election to be o-v-e-r as I have just about decided that, collectively, we have lost our minds. This occurred to me recently during a conversation with a friend about the Virginia House of Delegates race, during which my friend unapologetically said, “It’s party over people – it doesn’t matter what Carrie Coyner stands for or what she has done. You have to take that stand if you want the blue wave to have the impact we want.” First, and beyond the assuming pronoun “we,” I was completely taken aback that someone I consider to be…
Water, power and dogs
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Hard to believe we are already cruising through October and that I celebrated another birthday. I know it is better than the alternative, but it is getting to the point that the cake would catch on fire if they lit all of the candles at the same time. With that being said, I celebrated by taking a day off from work; it was a beautiful fall day, and to make it even better, my plumbers came to put in my jet pump/booster pump. Two hours and $600 later, I…

Hunting season
0Bow season began on the first Saturday in October. With hunting season upon us, we must make every effort to take all of the necessary safety precautions. I always thought that I was a safe hunter until a tree stand broke underneath me in November 2002 on the second Saturday of black powder season. An outdoor activity that many people enjoy put me out of work until the middle of January 2003. There was one thing that I did right that day, but there were many things that I did wrong. The right thing was: I signed in and put…
Trade agreement the focus of roundtable
0U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger talks last week while Billy Johnston listens. (Caleb M. Soptelean) U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger came to town Friday, Oct. 11, to talk about the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which is commonly known as USMCA. The first-term congresswoman met for a roundtable of about 18 citizens and businesspeople at BizWorks, 2545 Bellwood Road. Spanberger is generally supportive of the agreement, and is focused on how it would impact prescription drugs. She noted that the Mexican government has approved it and thinks that Canada is basically waiting on U.S. approval. However, Canada has elections later this month, which could…
