Community meal: Local church continues offering free suppers twice a month

The congregation has been hosting free evening dinners on the first and third Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. from September through May since 1999. William “Bill” David Morrissette Sr. of Chester, Va., passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019. Born in Tazewell, Va., to the late Clarence L. and Vicie Ratcliffe Morrissette, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Nancye Woods, Violet and his twin, Betty Whitlock. Bill was a member of Chester United Methodist Church. He retired after more than 30 years of service with Allied Chemical, and he was a U.S. Army veteran. Canipe named a Geography Teacher Fellow

Anne Canipe The American Geographical Society recently named Chester resident Anne Canipe as a 2019 AGS Geography Teacher Fellow. Canipe, who teaches Advanced Placement Human Geography at Cosby High School, is one of 50 teachers selected to participate in this fourth year of the initiative. The program is a year-long professional development opportunity that enables geography teachers to implement open-source mapping into their classrooms and provides supplementary resources and materials. Parade of Homes coming weekends in October

The Home Building Association of Richmond is hosting the 68th Annual Parade of Homes in October. The event is free to the public. The Parade of Homes, a self-guided tour of the region’s top new homes, begins on Oct. 5-6 and will run all four weekends of the month, including Oct. 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27. Hours are from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be 73 new homes built by 29 builder members in this year’s show.
