Run the Rocks 5K: Soldiers help with annual community event
0Students set off at the beginning of Saturday’s 5K race. Sergio Perez won the race. More than 400 people competed in the Run the Rocks 5K on Saturday at Elizabeth Scott Elementary School. Carrie Coyner, a former Parent Teacher Association president at the school, organized the event the previous five years, but this year handed the reins to Rebecca Hall. Coyner lauded Hall for a smooth transition. “I noticed that most of the fundraising and events we held centered around unhealthy food and selling things in our community,” Coyner said. “So I got this idea of eliminating sales and fundraisers,…

Small things
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Things are coming along in and around the house, but I am getting hit with a number of small issues that are not making me a happy camper. For example, the shed out back needs a new door handle. The current handle is just a simple latch that has a right-angle bar at the end that twists down behind the door frame to hold it shut. That right angle part had broken completely off, so I decided to take it off so I could find a match at Lowe’s.…
Eye see?
0Pat Rende spoke to the Chester Lions Club April 9 about the Lions’ KidSight USA program, which is aimed at infants and children six months to 6 years. Approximately 5 percent of children in this age group have amblyopia, a treatable disorder also known as ‘lazy eye,’ can result in permanently reduced vision when not addressed at an early age. Screening devices detect risk factors, such as strabismus (eyes that cross or wander out), refractive errors (the need for eyeglasses) and unequal vision between the two eyes. Amblyopia must be detected by age 6 and treated by age 7 to…

County officials address ‘food deserts’
0Federal and state lawmakers recently called for legislation to help people in low-income neighborhoods get better access to fresh vegetables and other healthy foods. Four so-called “food deserts” exist within Chesterfield County, according to a 2017 map from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. Although county officials say that food deserts exist in the county, they believe the issue has been exaggerated. Deputy county administrator Bill Dupler said that, although Chesterfield has some rural and urban areas, much of the county is suburban, so the rural and urban designations that the USDA used to create the map don’t…
