From left: Karson Jennings, Leigha Hill, and William Kimenhour sign their letters of intent. Last month, three Thomas Dale High School athletes put pen to paper on national letters of intent to play their respective college sports.   William Kimenhour was one of the most highly recruited volleyball players in Thomas Dale history. He will play at the University of Charleston in West Virginia.   Leigha Hill, a talented softball pitcher, will play at Longwood University.  Karson Jennings will play baseball at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.  Kimenhour and the Knights came up one victory short of a state championship in…

Henricus closure questioned, but Dominion says access will remain open

The potential for Henricus Historical Park to be closed for 15 years is a possibility as the state deals with a solution for coal ash at the Chesterfield Power Station, according to a Chesterfield County supervisor. However, a Dominion Energy official said access to the area will remain open. A Jan. 24 email from supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle asked constituents to contact House Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, to express concern about pending legislation and potential closure of the historical park, boat ramp and adjacent trails. “There has been absolutely no local input on this deal,” Jaeckle said. Dominion spokesman Dan Genest…

D Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. For the holidays, I made plans to visit my oldest daughter and her husband in North Carolina, and for good measure, I also made arrangements for daughter number two and her son to fly in from Knoxville. My flight was rather uneventful; my first flight got out the gate about 20 minutes late, but by the time we landed we were back online. Of course, the flight was full, and I got the last seat in the back of the plane, next to the toilet. I had no…

Guesses unnecessary

As I watched the late news last night, I saw a photo of the front of a house in the north end of Chesterfield County fully engulfed. I was going to write an article that offered three educated guesses of the potential causes, but my first inclination was determined to be the cause. From my observation, my thought was that the fire started on the outside of the home and progressed inside. The house in north Chesterfield was destroyed on the outside and the inside, displacing the residents. A fire that starts on the outside will get a head start…

CHESTERFIELD — The Maggie Walker Community Land Trust recently closed on its first home in Chesterfield County. The land trust will repair and rehabilitate a vacant home at 5616 S. Melbeck Road and sell it to a new homeowner later this year. Funding will come from a federal Community Development Block Grant. The funding will also allow the land trust to purchase, repair and sell additional unoccupied homes this year. Melbeck Road is located west of Route 10 and south of Route 150.
