Third group of students back in school buildings Oct. 26
0During a school board meeting Oct. 13, Chesterfield County Public Schools superintendent Merv Daugherty announced that Cohort 3 will begin returning to classrooms two days a week on Oct. 26. That group of students, which includes grades 4 and 5, along with career and technical education high school students, will continue to have virtual online instruction two days a week. Daugherty noted that the district’s health panel made the recommendation based on health data related to COVID-19. During public comment, Bermuda resident Carrie Watko encouraged the district to bring all students back to school with a distance of three feet…
English teacher – as seen on TV
0In the first few days of a new school year, Lauren Spain plays “Two Truths and a Lie” with her students, which is when they find out she appeared on HGTV’s “House Hunters” with her husband. Spain said the revelation wins her cool points with her students, and, she called her time on the show a funny experience. “If you’ve seen the episode, I promise my husband and I love each other, I love our house, and we do not care that much about crown molding baseboards,” Spain said. Virtual class has replaced in-person for the time being, so Spain hasn’t…

0Rick D’Abreu Thomas Dale High School Sophomore at East Carolina D’Abreu missed his senior season at Thomas Dale due to injury, but that didn’t stop the colleges from calling. After initially committing to James Madison University, D’Abreu ended up at East Carolina. In a 27-23 loss to Navy, he may have had a breakout game. The sophomore defensive lineman for the Pirates racked up 10 tackles, one for a loss, and he forced a fumble. Isaiah Moore L.C. Bird High School Junior (R) at N. C. Matoaca, Dale, Bird athletes add college offers
0A defensive end and tight end for Matoaca, Benjamin White has received his second college offer, this one coming from Hiram College in Ohio. While it’s not an official scholarship offer, as Division III schools do not have athletic scholarships, it is the offer of a roster spot should White attend the school. At 6-1 and 215 pounds, White provides a projectable and strong frame and the ability to be versatile. He’s used mostly as a blocking-type tight end, but hus offense has improved, and his skills and athleticism at defensive end are also on the rise. White’s other offer…

33 feet 7 inches
0One of the last calls that I ran on Truck 12 involved a person who had fallen from a tree stand and died. C-shift had gone to the initial call and we were sent back after shift change, to assist game wardens with their investigation. The tree stand was found to be 33 feet 7 inches off of the ground. The tree stand was a self-climber. It appears that the victim fell while attempting to either remove a coat or put it on. This call is forever engraved in my mind for a number of reasons. In 2002, I fell…
Little critters
0Hi and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I mentioned in the past that I have a few mice prowling around. I finally had to go hard and put in wire spring traps, since they were taking the poison and not eating it. I think they were just stocking it up for the cold winter months. I caught a couple, and after a few weeks I thought my problem was over, but not so. Over Labor Day I went to visit my sister and her husband, and on my return, I found little gifts where they should…
