Thanksgiving

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the thankful Dogpound. Hard to believe it is Thanksgiving already, and it is even harder to imagine that we even have a Thanksgiving considering that the Pilgrims barely made it through the first few years after they landed at Plymouth Rock. They left in September of 1620, and it took 66 days of sailing on a cramped Mayflower to reach their destination. That winter they had to stay on the ship, and by spring almost half of the crew and passengers had died. The first harvest was successful with the help…

Thanksgiving heat!

I do not think that a statistic has ever come out naming Thanksgiving as the top cooking day of the year, but for the sake of this article, we will treat it as such. I am getting hungry just thinking about all that will be fixed for the feast. The problem is that with more cooking comes an exponentially higher probability and possibility of an unattended cooking related fire. As you have heard me say, 3.7 out of every 10 residential fires, whether single-family or multi-family, occur in the kitchen. The disadvantage to multi-family dwellings is that you can do…

After 27 years with Chesterfield County Police Department, Kevin Bacon called it quits. Bacon, 50, retired Oct. 1. “My knees are getting a little achy,” he said, explaining the reason for his retirement from law enforcement. The 1986 L.C. Bird High graduate has embarked on a new career as a locksmith and real estate agent. Bacon said his interest in law enforcement started as a teen when he liked James Bond movies. In addition, stories told by John Corrigan, who worked for the Petersburg Police Department, piqued his interest. After he earned a degree in administration of justice at…

Dominion gets proposals for coal ash recycling

0

Dominion Energy has received 12 proposals to recycle coal ash at five of its ash ponds at four power stations in the state, including one in Chesterfield. The utility company made the announcement in a Nov. 14 press release. Earlier this year, the state Legislature passed a law – Senate Bill 807 – requiring that Dominion Energy conduct a Request for Proposals to determine the feasibility and costs of recycling coal ash at four power stations (Chesterfield, Possum Point, Chesapeake and Bremo) and other ash facilities at Chesapeake Energy Center. Dominion received 12 proposals and bids that ranged from $2.77…

Former Marine enjoys challenging his Tech Center students

1

At Chesterfield Career and Technical Center at Courthouse, Scott Steinruck is known as the “Oorah” guy. The former Marine said he tried to bring the Marine Corps into the classroom, but quickly realized that didn’t work. He instead used motivational techniques he learned in the Marine Corps to help motivate his students, but also learned how to temper that with compassion. Steinruck went on to manage different companies after he left the Marines and was involved in information technology when it was a burgeoning industry. Working in IT was an easy transition for him because he used to take things…
