Sawyer Perkins, a pediatric brain cancer contender from Mechanicsville, celebrated her eighth birthday in a big way when the Chester community gathered recently at Heritage Chevrolet to observe and participate with her receiving her first car. “A car? For an 8 year old? Absolutely! We all want to see our kids experience important milestones. It just happens that Sawyer’s terminal illness gives impetus for hers to come a little sooner,” said Kelley Kassay, president of the nonprofit organization Mason’s Toy Box, which along with Carter Myers Automotive, helped to speed up the process of her reaching one of life’s coolest…

Heat-related illnessess

0

Hot and humid days are the norm for this area. If proper measures are not taken to properly hydrate, then dehydration-related problems could lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, with the latter potentially fatal. It is important to prevent dehydration, but to also be aware of the symptoms of dehydration and progressing heat-related illness. Our bodies are 70 percent water. As long as the body is able to compensate for activity or illness, it maintains a state of homeostasis. It is when the body cannot keep up that significant problems begin to occur. Sweating…

To those alive in the late 1960s and ‘70s, chances are the jingle “Go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go!” may be familiar. Speed Racer appeared in comics and on television and was a success in both Japan and in the United States, and even spawned a 2008 film. Cory Rogers, a 15-year-old student at L.C. Bird High School, is trying his best to give Chester its own version of the cartoon star. Rogers doesn’t race cars, but instead motorcycles. Rogers, who has been racing since the age 9 and riding longer than that, may have received the need for…

Aging in the Dogpound

Hello and welcome back to the world of the Dogpound, where we are aging every day and thankful every day for that little blessing. I have been thinking more about getting older, since I am closer to the end than I am at the beginning, and with that, I have in turn been thinking more about my health. I know we are all blessed with abundant food availability. You have to be amazed when you sit down and really think about everything that has to happen to stock our grocery stores with the wide range of fruit, vegetables, meat and…
