Beds and closets in the Dogpound

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. So I need to ask my fellow pack members: when is a bed not a bed? Answer: When it turns into a closet. I can see by your puzzled looks that some of you did not make the connection, so let me explain. When I was little, the first chore of every morning was to make my bed. Nothing fancy like requiring hospital corners [which would come later when I served in the Army]. Just pull up the sheets and bedspread, smooth out all wrinkles and throw the pillow on top. Even when…

Kracke is an emergency management planner for the federal agency and completed her masters of public administration degree and got a graduate certificate in agricultural biosecurity and emergency preparedness. “Earning my master’s degree has been a true feat. I am the first person in my family to complete a college degree, let alone a master’s,” Kracke said. “Without the support and encouragement of my mom and dad, grandparents, and my dog, Misty, I would not have been able to achieve this goal so…

County approves $5.1M more for Chester arts center

By a 3-2 vote, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved an additional $5.1 million for Chester performing arts center last week. The “Baxter Perkinson Center for the Arts” would be located next to the Chester Library. Jim Holland made the motion, which was seconded by Dorothy Jaeckle. They were joined by Leslie Haley in voting yes. Steve Elswick and Chris Winslow voted no, county communications director Susan Pollard said. (A roll call vote was not taken and supervisors voted by voice.) “It’s so important that we always complete what we start,” Holland said. Jaeckle thanked the citizens who raised…

Armed mentors at elementary schools?

Above: Amrah O’Donnell; Donald Green A proposal to have 10 retired law enforcement officers work in 10 elementary schools in Chesterfield County generated some heat at a working group meeting last week. The School Safety Task Force Working Group No. 2 met at the school board office June 27. The working group discussed moving the proposal forward and a school district spokesman answered questions from some in attendance. The meeting became contentious at one point and resulted in a young man in the audience, Will Ares, walking out when he became upset at a woman working group member, Amrah O’Donnell.…

Maintain Sunset cemetery, writer says

1

To the editor: I have lived in Chester for nine years after marrying a lifelong Chester Village resident. What immediately attracted me to the area was the small-town atmosphere and the great people. I’ve spent many hours walking through Chester, exploring and exercising. Although there is always room for improvement in a town, much of Chester is quaint and nostalgic. However, what should be a place of quiet contemplation and memories, Sunset Memorial Park, is a blight and an eyesore standing on the busiest intersection in the area. There is routinely garbage along the fence line, American flags and faux…

Residents can purchase county bonds for the first time; $50M to be sold

0

CHESTERFIELD — For the first time, the county will sell approximately $50 million in bonds, offering them first to the public, meaning Chesterfield residents and other Virginians can buy bonds and invest directly in their community. The sale of these bonds will fund projects from the 2013 bond referendum, including a new Old Hundred Elementary School, and replacing Matoaca, Harrowgate, Reams, Crestwood, and Ettrick elementary schools, and major maintenance on other schools. That news came when the nation’s top three ratings agencies – Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch – reaffirmed Chesterfield County’s AAA bond rating last week. The county’s…
