County extension office opens in remodeled library

It was a long time coming, but Chesterfield County has a new extension office. The Cooperative Extension office relocated in late February from the old clerk of court’s office in the county governmental complex to the central library at the end of Lori Road. County extension agent Mike Likins remembers the move being considered as far back as 2011. Likins, who also serves as extension office director, said the move has provided more space for the county’s agriculture, family and consumer sciences and 4-H programs. Arts center gets $350K donation

CHESTER – A recent $350,000 donation toward an arts center has brought the facility closer to reality. The Chesterfield Cultural Arts Foundation announced Friday that Donna Meade Dean Stevens and Jayson Stevens made the donation in honor of country musician, TV show host and actor Jimmy Dean, Dean Stevens’ late husband. As a result, a 350-seat theater will be named the “Jimmy Dean Theatre.” The proposed “Baxter Perkinson Center for the Arts” will be located in the Chester Village Green next to the Chester Library. Police ask for help in solving five-year-old case

Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a five-year-old suspected homicide. Matthew McDaniel was found lying in the 5300 block of Pembroke Street near an intersection with Brampton Way on May 11, 2013. According to police, he died around 12:45 a.m. that day. Jim Munksgard, an investigator with Chesterfield police’s unsolved major investigations unit, and supervisor Kevin Helton are looking for those with information about the incident to come forward. No arrests have been made in relation to McDaniel’s death. “We have some information that indicates some people were involved,” police department spokeswoman Liz Caroon said. McDaniel lived…

Twins die after being found in vehicle

Two five-month-old children died Thursday after police found them in a vehicle at Maisonette Apartments. Chesterfield police responded at 2:29 p.m. May 10 to the apartments in the 2400 block of Alfalfa Lane just east of Jefferson Davis Highway in the Bensley area, a press release states. Chesterfield County Fire and EMS transported the children to Chippenham Hospital, where one was pronounced dead and the other died several hours later. Police Maj. Matoaca High School student Johnathan Simpson gave blood last fall. Virginia Blood Servives will be hosting a “blood mobile” at Matoaca High School from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 21. The vehicle will be parked in front of the Matoaca High School stadium. The community is encouraged to participate. Donors must be 16 or older and weigh no less than 110 pounds. CHESTERFIELD – Each year, Chesterfield County’s law enforcement community joins family, friends and government leaders to remember and honor the brave officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event is hosted by the Chesterfield County Police Department, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, the Chesterfield County Police Foundation, the Chesterfield County Police Retirees Association and the Chesterfield Fraternal Order of Police. This year’s ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Southside Church of the Nazarene, located at 6851 Courthouse Road.
