New police chief has vision for police athletic league

2

A neighbor provided some of the impetus for Chesterfield’s new police chief to choose law enforcement as a career field. Jeffery Katz, who started Jan. 2, recalled how one of his childhood mentors who lived next door influenced his life. The man, who was an undercover agent with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, taught Katz how to cut grass and build things out of wood. That neighbor, who has since retired to Chesterfield County, was part of a group of law enforcement officers who mentored Katz. “Sometimes I kid that I was raised by a pack of cops,” Katz said…

‘Health school hero,’ Coyner one of 13 winners of national award

1

School Board member Carrie Coyner starts some days by motivating other adults to be fit and healthy during her early-morning exercise class at the local YMCA. But, as a mother of three children and an engaged PTA member, the Bermuda District representative understands that healthy habits start at a young age. Recently, Coyner was named an Action for Healthy Kids 2017 Healthy School Hero award winner for her work and dedication to wellness in the life of Chesterfield County students. Through Coyner’s leadership and innovative ideas, Elizabeth Scott Elementary has created a culture of wellness that allows students to live…

ChamberRVA makes ‘baseball and apple pie’ presentation on megasite

3

To the Editor: I attended the Chesterfield Cabinet informational breakfast on megasites on March 22 at John Tyler Community College. This was sponsored by ChamberRVA and I paid a fee to attend. I was very disappointed to learn that this was a pep rally in support of the megasite project. For an “informational” meeting, I only heard the pro’s and not the con’s, so it was very one-sided. This breakfast was meant to show unity between the county, the EDA and VEDP, and their intent tomove forward with the Matoaca Megasite project, despite great opposition from their residents. I attend…

Rec building for the disabled planned for Camp Baker

0

A 10,000-square-foot in-door recreation facility for the disabled is being planned for Camp Baker near Pocahontas State Park. Doug Payne, a spokesman of the Greater Richmond ARC, said a site plan has already been approved by Chesterfield County with a ground-breaking scheduled for August and an opening in May 2019. Most of the funds necessary for the $2.5-million project have already been raised, Payne said. The ARC is hopeful that it will receive block grants totaling $473,000 from Chesterfield and Henrico counties and the cities of Richmond and Petersburg to cover remaining costs. The ARC has clients in each of…

Some busy days

0

I was reading the Daily Business Plan, a daily communication from the battalion staff to the department, stating in a one-page document the operational plan for the day. One part of the document is a listing of the “significant” calls from the past three shifts. On this day, both shifts had been very busy, with two of the department’s specialty teams being dispatched for mutual aid to neighboring jurisdictions. The on-duty technical rescue team was dispatched to Amelia for a person who had fallen into a grain silo. The on-duty hazardous material team was dispatched to Richmond to assist with…

Speaker Cox announces creation of school safety committee

0

RICHMOND – Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox announced March 8 the formation of the House Select Committee on School Safety to make recommendations for consideration by the General Assembly during the 2019 Session. This is the first select committee formed in the House in 155 years. Select committees are reserved for matters of considerable significance that cross the jurisdiction of conventional and established standing committees. “The House of Delegates led the effort in recent years to make our schools safer, but the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, shows us that we must be ever-vigilant when it comes to school…
